I was a little anxious about taking the time for a long shopping trip, but I turned out to have been in the right place. As I was browsing the Salvation Army store, there were suddenly two big dogs wandering around the aisles. With everybody in the store asking anyone around them "Are those your dogs?" it was clear that nobody knew where they came

I am glad you saw John Street! It is probably the steepest street in Syracuse, and the only brick street on the north side of the city. There are about a half dozen streets that still have brick paving. The rest of them are all in the outer university area.

Clarendon Ave. ~only one block of it near Thornden Park.
Westmoreland Ave. ~a long hill running south from Harvard Place.
Scottholm Terrace ~one steep section of it.

Sorry, I think there are a couple more, but I can't remember where.

Many of our hills in the Syracuse area are drumlins, a glacial feature.

I understand that drumlins are a pretty rare geographical feature, which makes it an interesting coincidence that I moved from one area known for them to another. (I didn't know that central New York had them until you mentioned it.) Personally, I don't know anything about them other than that they make neat hills. Glacial topography is totally not my area, though one of the professors at Parkside was really into it.

But John Street is awesome! I want to go see what it's like in the winter! I don't know that I'd try to ride on it though; even in perfectly dry weather, I was a little nervous descending it.

Yeah, I don't think I would have the nerve to drive down John street in the snow even in a car. Even Green Street and Oak St are pretty scary with a little snow. Years ago, I slid down Seely Rd, backward, almost to Erie Blvd, on a snowy day!

What time do you want to get together for dinner tomorrow?

I wonder if there are any Youtube videos out there of cars sliding down John Street in the winter....
