Well, I never thought it would happen to me.

I have been plagiarised. Whoo! [/sarcasm]

My story Silence, which was written for SG-1, has been reposted with the names changed as a Torchwood story, Isolation, by wickedplotbunny.

Here is my line by line comparison of the first three or four paragraphs. I didn't have the energy to do more.

Unfortunately, I don't have the original date that my story was ( Read more... )

2008, fandom: torchwood, fandom: stargate sg1, mod: spiralleds, medium: fanfiction

Hi
You probably don't know me but I've been out on the fandom for a year or so (this account and another) and I would just like to add my disgust.
WPB used to be on my flist and I had betaed for her a few times. It frustrates me to all hell.

I've been plagurised before, in fic and video, and I know how annoying it is. But this is massive. Do you think any of her stories are original???

I am jsut so annoyed... I have no words. She better not show up again.

It's beginning to look as though none of her stories are original. If she's not ripped off fanfiction, she appears to have ripped off pro novels instead.

I've updated the main post with the links we have to date. I'm sorry you got caught up in this.

Far from your fault, love
Pro novels?! Wow! I mean, I've used quotes and stuff but always given credit!
To rip off an actual published book? Phew! She's screwed!

A quick google tells me that at least some of the imagery from 'Coping Mechanism' (...I try to focus on mundane things; that my thoughts become distorted in my head and all I can see are plates of dust, frozen trees, or the bleached angle of a jawbone.) is apparently lifted wholesale from this book as cited here:

What I love about Downham is that she will be rolling right along with this straight-forward (yet always gripping) narrative and then slip in these transcendent moments of gorgeously stark, poetic prose (”Leukaemia is a progressive disease. I’m supposed to get weaker and weaker until I don’t care anymore. But I still care. When am I going to stop caring? I try to think of simple things - boiled potatoes, milk. But scary things come into my mind instead - empty trees, plates of dust. The bleached angle of a jaw bone”). [my emphasis]

Good catch. It makes sense that if Wickedplotbunny is also OdetoSpot, who is a fan of Star Trek, that she'd be drawing on material from that fandom as well.

Umm... I have a rather sneaky idea... does anyone have her IP address?
Cause then you could just see what other users have that IP address and then you'll know what other accounts she has because I know she has another that was running the same time as this and that she posted fics on that one too...

Don't we have a mod of torch_wood mixed up in this?

In fact, you might, if you still have any emails that she sent you when she sent you items to beta. You'd need to open the full header in the email to see if. If you do have any old emails, and would have that info, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hey there. I wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten you. Now that I've got the Chen06/Ping/Marcella case written out, I can go back to focusing on this one.

At one point it there was someone who had made a connection between the name "wickedplotbunny" and "odetospot". It wasn't clear to me how they made the link, and I was going to follow up before doing the summary post. Do you have any recollection who mentioned that or which conversation thread it was a part of? Part of my interest is that may be the only way of getting in touch with WPB, which isn't necessary, but you never know, she might offer up info about her source material.

And I have to say, great chart. When I do the summary, I shall simply refer to it rather than recreating the wheel. :-)

Thank you.

If it is the same person, she's also plagiarised that Star Wars story on ff.net, Subterfuge. It was posted two years previously under the same story name but different author name to the Jedi Council Forums.

The ff.net story under the OdetoSpot account is here.

The original story, Subterfuge, was posted to the Jedi Council Forums under the name DarkSaber in October 2005
here.

Thank you. I'm collecting up the links. What I'll try to do next is get in touch with the people who may have been emailing with her - see if we can get verification that the identities are indeed one in the same. If we can line these us, there may be a couple more stories in need of IDs, as well as the possibility of icon fraud. Oi vey.
