Apologies for the mild spamming, but this is relevant.

Hi! I've just been contacted as regards a case of plagiairsm in Roswell icons. I know it's a bit far from our main focus etc, but I feel that we should handle it. Does everyone else feel the same? Or do people feel that we should stick to one area?

I'd really appreciate people's views.

Quinara.

Plagiarism is plagiarism. I'm for it. :)

That was what I thought. The thing is, now it could have been an accident...and I've got to walk the fine line between naivete and being totally too harsh. :(

Yeah we should. But golly that's a big area to get into.

I know! It's not exactly a close link.

(Yesterday, we dealt with Buffy and Angel fanfic...
Today, we deal with Roswell icons...
Tomorrow, we'll deal with the WORLD! *cackles*)

(Do not ask where that came from. I'm scared to think about it.)

A desire for world domination is completely understandable.

Yes, but I always had visions of myself with a big tank, as opposed to dealing with plagiarism issues.

(And I'm sure I could've come up with a way of expressing the whole "world" thing a bit more snappily than I did...sorry about that.)

It really is a matter of time. If you're willing to invest it, then go for it. Plagiarism sucks, no matter what the fandom.

Having said that I have to admit that I am currently not in the right frame of mind to go on a chase and help out. Hope that's ok.

Luckily, it looks like it should be quite cut and dried. Well, cut and dried in the sense that the perpertrator admits to it but says it was an accident. I really don't know whether or not to give her the benefit of the doubt, and so am thinking about setting up a 'watch' list to keep an eye on her, but not actually condemn her...sort of like a caution.

That's absolutely fine!

Sorry to bombard you with my ramblings, by the way.

No need to apologise. You are doing a great job!

A watch list is a good idea.

Thank you!

I'm hoping it'll be the last change to the whole system, because otherwise the "case-by-case" thing might be going a little too far.

I know. As I think I've said in an email to you, I was thinking about setting up a "Keep Watch On" list, so that we can track her if she does the same thing again and tries to use the same excuse (cynicism in action there).

I just feel that if I'd done that, I would hate to be branded a plagiarist when it was all a mistake. Of course, I would also make sure never to do it again, so I think a "warning" may be the best course forward.

The heading is:

LIST OF THOSE WHO HAVE HAD ACCIDENTS TO DO WITH PLAGIARISM AND THEREFORE NEED A VERY LAZY EYE KEPT ON THEM.

And then it gets clarified a bit more.

Icon-making can be as much a creative endeavour as writing. Hours/days can be dedicated to perfecting just one icon. Icon plagiarism is just as valid as the textual kind, though the playing field is a large one. Good luck!

Thank you! And I have so much respect for people who make icons, because even with 100 pixels, some of them can be real works of art - which I, frankly, have no skill at whatsoever.
