It's actually not too bad if not recognizable. Gladiators are expensive assets, and they're treated as such. Over here near the window, you'll be given your rations for the day. Do well in your fight and impress someone, and they might send down something extra.

There is equipment here as well as practice weapons. Feel free to beat on some dummies before the match. Or spar with a fellow gladiator.
