[Polly wanders through the park, a small red vixen trotting ahead of her. She gives no particular thought to where they're going, simply letting Alice lead the way... that is, until she hears the peculiar sound of Holmes' playing.]

[She knows it's a violin--her friend Quatre has been teaching her how to play. But this music isn't like anything she's been learning. With a brush of her mind, she alerts the little non-fox of their new direction, and they set out to investigate.]

[Holmes is too busy, or perhaps Polly is too far away, for him to notice anyone immediately approaching. He continues his playing, this time making his violin sing in a low, melodic tone.

But even in what seems to be a musical trance, Sherlock's perception of his surroundings are not completely dulled. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees two figures approaching; a woman and small, fox-like creature.

Despite his intent, it seems he has attracted a small audience. For now he continues he exercise at the violin, but makes a mental note of their distance relative to him.]

[Nearing the violinist, Polly recognizes him from the Network. She stops a short distance away, content simply to listen quietly. The newness and strangeness of it brought a small smile to her face.]

[Alice, on the other hand, creeps close, nose quivering as she tries to familiarize herself with his scent.]

[Sherlock resisted against a sigh. Yes, the creature was heading his way, looking somewhat curious, and there was very little he could do about it. He thought he shouldn't be too terribly surprised; on a ship as bustling as this, there were sure to be interruptions of many kinds.

Maybe he should have stayed in his room after all.

He abruptly quit his playing, leaving a high note pathetically ringing in the air as he removed his bow from the strings, and eyed the little vixen]

Wasn't aware my playing attracted animals.

[He waved his bow in the general direction of where Polly stood, as well]

Or even an audience, for that matter.

It had been a busy day, and in aftermath taking an afternoon walk sounded like a very nice idea indeed, to Ukitake - so that was what he had decided to do. Taking a peaceable retreat from room 5-7, several minutes later found his idle steps tracing down to the park in the lower areas of the Thor.

He drifted at an absent pace down the walkways interspersing the area for a little while, lost in thought, arms folded in his kimono sleeves and zanpakuto taking up a familiar weight at his side through his sash. The aimless wandering wasn’t to last, however - the strains of some sort of meandering music began to catch his attention, not too far distant.

Ukitake found he couldn’t immediately identify the instrument from sound alone - and, faintly mystified, he followed the wandering notes and eventually pinpointed the source: a man sitting on a bench, an instrument in hand. After some mental perusing he realized that it was a violin - ah, of course it was a violin - though he could admit to never seeing the actual instrument in person, ( ... )

no problem, I started it off with tl;dr anyway XD; whatsolarsystem September 10 2010, 02:04:01 UTC
The problem with being extraordinarily talented with observing things, Sherlock had found out long ago, was that such a talent lacked an 'off' switch. He had sat down to play in order to sort out his thoughts, not to create more connections, more details, more data to sort through later.

But despite this, he noticed movement out of the corner of his eye, and with further inspection, it appeared to be a man. His playing continued, but his notes were slightly more sporadic, as his attention was elsewhere.

Sherlock recognized him from his guide. Ukitake Jushiro, was it?

"Afternoon," he called out, loud enough for the newcomer to hear him.

The greeting caught Ukitake a bit by surprise - he hadn't realized he'd ended up drifting within eyeshot of the latter - but what was done was done, he supposed. He hadn't been intending to disturb the man in the first place, but...well, that couldn't be helped now ( ... )

Sherlock played a few more haphazard notes as Ukitake drew closer, looking over him with a discerning eye. Flowing clothes, definitely not modern yet very exotic, no doubt owing to his seemingly Japanese heritage. (Of course, the whole "spirit" conversation he had with him made that part a little more complicated. But nonetheless-) He carried a weapon at his side, a katana it seemed. That in itself lent to the theory of a warrior or fighter, but his countenance was the opposite of threatening. Actually, he seemed rather friendly; a fact that was cemented by Sherlock's previous interactions with the man.

Sherlock snapped to attention when Ukitake began speaking, quitting his "music" for the time being, and setting down his bow next to him.

"That's right," he replied. "Saw you on the screen. Said your name was Ukitake Jushiro?"

THIS IS LATE but pinged by violin... cattyremarks September 11 2010, 19:45:56 UTC
Like Sherlock, Ikuto wasn't too fond of staying in his room. He was never one for enclosed spaces in the first place, and that really was all the Thor was; despite its immense size (as big as a city, they say) the fact of the matter was that at the end of the day, walls still surrounded them all as they hurdled through space.

So Ikuto walked. It wasn't the same as exploring the world as he had been doing before arriving here, but it would have to be enough for now. He still wasn't anywhere near used to things. Sharing an elevator with someone that had green skin and five eyes still surprised him, and so did visiting new worlds. Adapting was difficult, but it had to happen eventually.

But then familiarity hit him. He could spot the sound of a violin from anywhere, and he immediately headed toward the direction from which it came. It was an... interesting style, for lack of a better word, but it was still a violin. Once he spotted Sherlock, he stopped before getting too close to him. He didn't want to intrude until the player was done

Sherlock continued playing for a few moments more, despite the fact that he had noticed movement somewhere off in the distance. His playing had either brought on more curiosity than intended, or someone had decided to pop by and gripe at him for his... unusual techniques and sound.

The figure hadn't moved forward, so it obviously wasn't someone too terribly displeased with his playing. Simple observation, then.

Well, that wouldn't do. That was his forte, after all.

Sherlock quieted his violin; it still sang an odd melody, but it was low enough to be spoken over.

"Sorry if it's not a sound you're quite used to," he said a little unenthusiastically. "Not in the mood for concertos."

They always notice you when you don't want to be, huh?

Ikuto shrugged, not moving from his spot. He was at least somewhat close enough to still hold a passable conversation with the guy.

"It's attention grabbing," he replied, trying his best to hide his amusement. He listened to the soft playing for a moment longer before adding anything else, studying the notes.

"Enjoying yourself?" he finally said.

Sherlock let a final note ring out before he stopped completely, setting the now unused bow right next to him.

"This is done less for enjoyment and more for thinking. Hard to get everything situated in the mind all at once, being new and all," he explained a little dryly.

"But there might be some enjoyment in it," he added after a moment. He picked up his bow again and instead waved it in Ikuto's general direction. "You have an interest in music?"
