And so it begins. dr_kiriko July 18 2010, 05:01:05 UTC
He'd never seen anything like it before. Thousands of shelves of books upon books, bestsellers not only of earth, but of thousands of planets from hundreds of galaxies. Dr. Kiriko quietly entered the library, staring in awe at the size of the first shelf he saw.

Figuring it would be a good place to start as any, he began to graze his fingers across the spines of the books delicately. So many titles... Vogon Anatomy (And how to Avoid It), Apparent Religious Miracles to Expect in the Future, The Trouble With Tribbles, and....

"...Hmmm...?"

His hand stopped on a plain, nameless hardcover.
This book wasn't like the others. An embossed heart adorned the side, but no lettering. No apparent author. No title. Archaic in form, still printed on paper.

Intrigued, the Doctor seized it, and gently cracked open the cover.

The inside cover was completely blank.
The next page was blank, as well. The next one, too. And the next... Even when he held each page up to the light, nothing appeared.

"What the hell...?"He had no use for an empty book. ( ... )

If there was one thing that Anemone completely hated, it was being bored. She had already bothered most of her usual victims during the day, and she raided the pastry shop for a snack for her pet. After finally giving up on the act of simply people watching, the girl asked a random alien what they enjoyed doing while on the ship. She somehow managed to translate his loud snorting to 'the library', and began to head over to it with Gulliver in tow.

Its size nearly doubled-- no, tripled the one she was familiar with back home. Anemone really wasn't the type to stand around and marvel at things like this, so she went straight to a shelf and yanked a book out. The biography of some dead dictator from some dead planet. She shoved it back, frowning. If all the books were going to end up being like this one then there was no point in even coming. She walked along the aisles, pulling volumes out of their place before setting them aside, boredom once again creeping up at her. She was just about to turn around to leave when something caught ( ... )

A quick post during break dr_kiriko July 18 2010, 21:15:24 UTC
Immediately the landscape changed around her - the clean, sterile white library transforming into a filthy, barren wasteland. The explosions of mines and bombs can be heard in the distance - some closer than others. The ambiance of missiles and gunfire is deafening, and beside her, a remnant firebomb crackles and spits. Overhead, helicopters fly out the fresh dead. Occasionally, a chopper drops down biochemical warfare in showers - a foul, sour smell, soaking everything in sight. The bodies of decaying soldiers surround her, now - and some of the fallen are still alive, grown men begging and crying for mercy from their pain.

The book in Anemone's hand is now filled to the brim with a rushed, scrawling text; every page covered from top to bottom in only half-legible cursive. Making out the writing is nearly impossible - it can only be explained as the rushed memoirs of a soldier.

"What the...?"

Anemone had been raised by the military from a young age and had been in battlers herself, so the sound of guns didn't frighten her as much as it should. But the corpses are what caught her attention. It scratched at a memory, buried deep within her, of a time long ago. Death had surrounded her then too; death and plague and nothing.

She shook the thought away, pushing aside her own memories. The moment was over. She peered curiously at one of the fallen soldiers, faintly wondering how long it was going to take him to die before moving on. What was going on? This was definitely not Thor anymore. She didn't recognize the setting at all, actually. Even Gulliver was no longer with her. The more she looked around, the more paranoid she became.

What's happening? What's happening? What's happening? It echoed in her mind. Besides boredom, if there was one thing that the girl hated, it was being left in the dark.

Warriors tended to have no reason for reading, but fortunately, his father had taught him a significant amount for training. Still, this place... the text and words were all completely foreign. Were any of these remotely close to anything he had read before? No text familiar to the Aesir or Vanir... nothing even remotely similar to Titanian text either...

... Hm? Wait a moment.

Oswald reaches forward, seizing the rather bland spine. Nothing was written on it as compared to the other books surrounding it, but turning it over, the design could be akin to the coins of Valentine or the ancient Vanir books. Curiously, he dare open it.

"Hm...?"

Was... it correct to be blank? None of the other books he tried to look at were empty. He thumbed through the pages, catching no sight of any text or even picture. How strange for such a bizarre ship to have a blank novel. Closing it, he put it down on a table and left. Maybe someone failed to inform the librarian; oh well, no need to return an empty book.

Hatsuharu saw Oswald place a book down on the table. Out of curiosity, he went over to look at it, since it didn't seem to have a title on the spine.

What was this book?

How strange.

Now he couldn't just ignore it. He had to open it and look through it, despite the blank pages.

(OOC: You'll have to inform me as we go which parts to exactly cover, k?)Upon the book's opening, the library is drawn away, disappearing from sight. Instead, tall blades of grass resonating with orbs of light appear accompanied by massive trees tightly packed and threaded together. They stretch on for endless miles of forest. The small orbs seem to hover around the area, giving it a strange, mystical glow. It helps to cast light on a figure probably Hatsuharu's height. They can be made out to be a young male leisurely walking through the grass ( ... )

Odd. He was completely aware that he was terrible directions, and that he got lost often, but this... this was different. He didn't remember leaving the library at all.

Hatsuharu had to wonder if this was something normal that happened here... He'd only been here a few days. He wouldn't know otherwise.

But still, this all seemed so... dreamlike, and he didn't remember falling asleep...

He flipped through several pages of the book, looking for a taste of what this book would be like in the next few chapters.

Hughes and Kurt best_papa_evar July 18 2010, 05:23:58 UTC
Who wouldn't expect Hughes to march over to the library? If anyone doubted, there he was, skimming over the many, many rows of books. Granted, many of them were in languages he'd need to study years on to even comprehend, so he left most of the alien stuff be. A few science books here and there, a large selection of science fiction--and a Hitchhiker's something or another--later and he was struck curious by a book with no title on the spine.

"Curious."

He took it and flipped through the many pages. All white, blank, crisp pages. Perhaps a lineless journal someone misplaced... Perhaps in an invisible ink or something? Whatever the case, he certainly couldn't read anything from it.

So he placed it back on the shelf casually, walking along to another row of books.

Kurt on the other hand was used to visit the place. He did it often when Aoko worked here and later when Worlfram needed some children books for the kids he was taking care of. The place was also good for study and he needed to check so many things and weird stuff for the school assignments...he was no used to text that required him to know about the whole universe.

He was looking for a book about the planet Bartledan when he saw a book with no title on the spine. He took it, he was a curious teen after all, and looked at the cover. Nothing there, nothing in the back either. Strange.

He decided to open it to see what was the book about.

Kurt eyes? widened. Where was him? What happened to the library? Then he heard the crash and spot the boy.

"You're ok?" He felt the urge to help him automatically but the kid didn't even looked at him, nor he seemed to acknowledge him. Kurt frowned and clenched the book in his hands, what's this it's fault?

Shion and Tifa cleaningkosmos July 18 2010, 05:43:03 UTC
Shion didn't like libraries. In fact, she didn't like books, and had someone asked her, she would not have hesitated to tell them so, going on at some length about obsolete technology and its pointlessness.

Which left her presence in said library open to question. She knew, of course, why she was here, but that was a question she was much less likely to answer, even to herself. She'd merely felt like being here, that was all.

She wandered the shelves, a distant look on her face, and chose a book at random. She did not necessarily expect to be able to read it, but she had not expected it to be blank. That was strange; why would a library have a blank book? Shion might not visit them often, but it seemed unusual, even to her.

With a mental shrug, she put it back. It was silly, but it wasn't any of her business. She was unlikely to return here anyway; what did it matter if they put blank books on the shelves and wasted everyone's time. Mood a little darker, she kept going, frowning a little to herself.

Tifa had just been looking around the ship, trying her best to get acquainted with the setting as best she could. Of course, a ship as large as the Thor meant it would be an ongoing exploration, but that didn't detour her in the least. Her latest excursion taking her into the library.

She'd never actually been in a library before or seen that many books all in one place for that matter. It was kind of awe inspiring to see so much knowledge gathered in one place for all to share. Idly she wandered through the various stacks, randomly reading the titles of books off as she did so.

Suddenly she stopped as her eyes fell on a book with no title on the spine. How odd that out of all the books she had seen, this particular one was nameless. Curiosity getting the better of her, Tifa moved forward and pulled the book off the shelf for a closer look.

After a moment of looking over the cover and still seeing no title or author, Tifa opened the book to check inside, completely oblivious to what was about to happen.

[Do I have to be the first one to do this? Major eep.

Ok, first, I'm going to give you some general background on Xenosaga, to set the scene and save time later. Xenosaga is set in the far future. While some things are basically familiar, there are some obvious things that may stand out - holographic signs, transparent computers, all calls being video, etc. There are robots, though not that many. Space travel is common and there's a government for much of the galaxy in addition to planetary governments and factions (you may hear some of this mentioned).

Humanity has encountered no alien races, so while there are many, many settled planets, they are all settled by humans. While humans do have jobs, much of the unpleasant or dangerous labor is actually performed by Realians, artificially-created and programmed humans. She probably won't see them explained, but she'll definitely hear the term used - Realians are very common.

For the rest of this chapter, go here. It's long enough that it's easier to link.]

Tifa blinked her eyes rapidly as the library faded away into entirely new setting. "...What...?" Though her questioned trailed off when she spotted a young girl playing on a swing. Instinctively she opened her mouth to call out to the girl, but fell silent yet again when she saw a man walk over to her ( ... )
