this is just beautiful!!! it makes my heart grow like three sizes to see them as essentially married-people, constantly rediscovering how much they love one another. IN SEATTLE, where they would be very happy (i agree with mlyn).

also, oh, so delicious and sexy!

Honey, if your heart grew three sizes, it would totally exceed the bounds of generosity :-). But I take your point, and I am grateful for it. And yes yes yes, they're married as all hell, in the way they deserve, in the way I want to be some day (oh, God, is that emotional MarySuing? I'm going to the special hell, aren't I...).

As I told mlyn above w/re Seattle: this story is actually part of a long arc - most of which is still in my head and will probably remain there - at one point on which Fraser and Ray relocate to the West Coast for family-related reasons and at a later point on which they build what starts out as a vacation cabin and winds up being their home on one of the islands in the Puget Sound. The stories I wrote for ds_match and due South Seekrit Santa 2007 both take place along that arc as well, the ds_match one during the time that they're building the cabin and the dSSS one much earlier, while they're still living in Chicago. And, as with mlyn, it pleases me greatly that you, as someone who knows the area, agree with my ( ... )

hee! no, no it's not emotional mary-sue-ism!!! it's like duck says: we all want to love and be loved. that's what it's ABOUT. you cannot be sent to the special hell for WRITING HAPPY RAY AND FRASER. or if you can, WE'LL ALL BE THERE TO GREET YOU.

and yes, oh yes, i think the pacific northwest answers the "but where would they live?" question very, very nicely. \o/

Man, that concept makes me teary every time. We DO. How come we don't GET to more often?

Hah. That's quite satisfying. Some day I hope to get some more of that arc on paper...

Wow, qe2, elementalv was absolutely right: slow, dreamy sex between two middle-aged guys who know each other that well is such a hotly intimate and absorbing premise for a fic, and your writing here is like poetry. There were so many vivid images and turns of phrases here, and the whole story was so sensual and evocative.

I loved everything about this fic: the Seattle setting, the fact that they're both past fifty and clearly still hot for one another, Ray's characteristically uncharitable description of himself (no way could that guy ever blend into the woodwork) and Fraser's relaxed passivity. He's clearly learned to go with the flow, to follow wherever Ray wants to lead him. And Ray has learned to trust himself. It's such a quiet little bit of characterization in a sea of porny goodness, but it made me really appreciate how far these guys have come, and what it means to get older, and wiser, and better.

Thanks so much for this! What a great way to start the day.

Darlin', your feedback deserves its own feedback. How do you do that?

I have a huge thing for these men as MEN: not arrested boys, not paramilitary paragons, not even (heresy!) as young as they were when the series was on. I absolutely admit the connection between this kink and my own advancing age (though, in my defense, I've found actual adulthood and silvering hair attractive and desirable for years), and also between this kink and my desires for my own emotional state. Fact remains: committed, quarrelsome, loving RayK/Fraser some years on does it for me like few other things.

I...actually, there's not much I can say about what you've said, except to express my delight in it. You've highlighted my own favorite things about the story and seen some things therein I hadn't even known were there. Basking time.

It may have been a quick-turnaround thing

Dear god in heaven, was it EVER a quick-turnaround thing. (Just ask spuffyduds.) I was mildly terrified about posting it at all (I'd have been more than mildly terrified if I'd been soberer and less exhausted), but I didn't want to risk The Wrath Of The Mod, so I closed my eyes and did the necessary :-). I'm so glad it worked for you!

1) SQUIDGE.

2) Thank you! Coming from you, that means a great deal.

3) SQUIDGE.

4) It sort of is, isn't it. That line wrote itself, and looking at it afterwards was kind of fun, in this "where did you come from, and how are you so right without my willing it?" way.

5) SQUIDGE. (In case this was not yet clear to you.)
