On the 19th of April 2011 dshael reported a possible case of plagiarism involving the Doctor Who fandom. The original report can be found here
The original report related to a story posted by polgarawolf called 'When the Doctor Met the Captain: Ten Times' a Dr Who/Torchwood story which was posted on fanfiction.net here and had a number of passages being similar to 4 other separate stories;
Everyone You Know by CherryIce,
Choices by RobinC,
Emergent Properties, by Dameruth and
A Split Second by Joolz,
while not in the original report but later reported in regards to the same story More Than True by dameruth.
Side by side comparisons immediately shows there are obvious passages and/or sentences that are identical in the story posted by polgarawolf .
However, on further investigation of this case and further reports being submitted to the community, this same issue has also been raised in a number of other stories polgarawolf has posted. To date there are 7 stories from polgarawolf that have been found to have taken from up to 14 other sources, these include;
Serenity: Dreaming a brand new verse in the Star Wars fandom posted by polgarawolf has taken from Steven Brust's unofficial Firefly novel My Own Kind of Freedom ;
Choosing to Shine:Saving Benighted Souls a BtVS and Star Wars crossover posted by polgarawolf has taken from a published fantasy novel Ombria in Shadow by Patricia A. McKillip.
So Much For Outbound Flight in the Star Wars fandom posted by polgarawolf has taken from the published science fiction novel In Conquest Born by C.S. Friedman.
Only a Dream in the Star Wars fandom posted by polgarawolf has taken from The Definition of Inexperienced a Harry Potter femmeslash story posted on witchwinter.
Thwarting the Revenge of the Sith, Book III in the Star Wars fandom posted by polgarawolf has taken from By Any Other Name by switchknife.
Agent Shaw Versus the Plan for the Chuck fandom posted by polgarawolf has taken from The Greatest of These a Superman/Batman story by tmelange.
What matters at the end of days for the Spiderman fandom posted by polgarawolf has taken from This Is How By Aine Déande.
As stated in the original report dshael advised polgarawolf of the similarities, polgarawolf maintains that they have never read, nor had the opportunity to read, the stories dshael pointed out that were similar. This purpose of this report is to maintain an unbiased and objective decision on the merits of the reports, it will not address the personal issues of anyone involved.
On accepting the original report I contacted polgarawolf to advise of the situation and give a fair chance to respond. The response was further denials of having read the stories in the original report. As the comparisons have shown, there are some sentences that have been altered slightly or differing punctuation used but not so much that it can been seen as anything but a copy while with others full paragraphs are exact. Slight rewording of an already available story is not in keeping with the defence of a story being an AU or based on canon events.
The ongoing denials of having limited internet access or having no knowledge of the original stories have little bearing on the end result. The issues of having no knowledge of these stories is doubtful in at least one specific case; the author of This Is How had a friend request from polgarawolf to be added to the journal to be able to read ‘a Harry Potter femmeslash story’ on 11/4/2007 prior posting of What matters at the end of days on 10/05/2007.
Also the posting of the story Agent Shaw Versus the Plan occurred a week after polgarawolf became a member of the community where The Greatest of These was first posted.
In total there are 12 individual stories that have had portions taken and added into various stories posted by polgarawolf as their own writing.
polgarawolf will be added to the list of known plagiarists.
