Nanashii & Midii

[Midii had seemed delighted that he'd asked her to walk with him. It was... nice. He led the way away from the front gate and towards the gardens, thinking they would both enjoy whatever they'd find there. Even if they didn't talk much, they rarely did. But they said what they needed to and understood what went unsaid-at least she understood what he wanted to say more often than not.]

[She followed not far behind, having surprisingly little difficulty keeping up with his long strides.]

[For a time, they were left in a comfortable silence. Even as their path slowly took them further and further away from the general public...into a quiet solitude they both favored. Midii allowed her gaze to wander in the meanwhile; there were certainly no lack of things to look at, and her eyes quickly fell upon the various flora of the area.]

[A combination of him adjusting his strides to better suit hers, and her simply being able to keep up with him.]

[Quiet. Peaceful. Nanashii found himself better able to relax when it was just him and Midii walking.]

[He glanced over at the comment, then followed her gaze to try and see exactly what she was talking about. Or if she meant in general. After a moment, he decided it was a more general statement, and an accurate one at that.]

It is.

[She knelt down to get a better view of one of the plants, a lovely orchid-like flower. The hem of her skirt billowed around her as she absently tucked her hair behind her ear.]

We never got to see plants like these back home. I'm not even sure flowers could grow in half the places we traveled.

[He stopped when she did, half turning to watch.]

Unlikely.

[Not with where exactly he traveled, nor how he traveled. Space wasn't very welcoming, though it still held a vast amount of appeal to him. Empty, just like him. And yet more and more things were moving in to fill up specks of space.]

[Like Midii. Quatre. To name a couple.]

[And with one last appreciative glance, she lightly ran her fingers over the soft petals before standing. Her eyes met with his as she turned around. She remained silent for a moment, discreetly biting her lip before coming to an internal decision.]

May I ask you something?

[Agreement flickered in a corner of his mind. Beauty like those flowers should be enjoyed.]

[He waited expectantly, curious as to what she could want to ask him. It had to have been on her mind a bit, considering the lip-biting. His silence should be enough to tell her he didn't mind the asking. She'd probably even get an answer.]

Why did you ask me to walk with you this evening?

[Not that she wasn't happy for the request. In fact, there was nothing in any world she would have wanted to do more right then. But she couldn't help her curiosity. For all she knew and understood about Nanashii, there was still so much she didn't.]

[Why had he asked her? His gaze flicked away, looking around for a long moment.]

[It wasn't just because they'd agreed to try working things out. It wasn't just because he enjoyed her company, either. It wasn't even just because she was one of the few who understood him better than others.]

[But combining them all together, that gave him the answer.]

[She knew she was pushing it. That was as specific an answer as he had ever given her...and yet...for some reason, it wasn't good enough. Not this time. This time, she wanted for the unspoken to be said aloud.]

[Would she walk away this time, if he didn't?]

[... He didn't want that. But it wasn't that simple. It was opening himself up again.]

[Where was the line between it being worthwhile, and not?]

[Even if he'd already mostly taken that step. It was saying the words that was tripping him up.]

[Then irritation flickered and he glanced at her almost defiantly. He'd never agreed that he'd fully answer her. He'd said what he felt he could. That would just have to be enough.]

[His reaction didn't disappoint. In fact, it was better than she had been expecting. So much so that she couldn't help smiling.]

Because you asked.

You never would've done that before.

[That threw him enough that his visible eye widened slightly in surprise. That was what she'd wanted from him? How she'd wanted him to react? But... why?]

['Because he'd asked'... She was right. He wouldn't have asked before.]

[He hadn't dropped the subject; it anything, he had only fueled it.]

[And much as the memories still pained her, this was her chance to admit what she couldn't before.]

Probably not. No matter how much I'd wanted to.

It was hard enough having to live with the knowledge of what I was doing, but getting close...hurt. Physically hurt.
