Terry laughed as Ben danced around him in glee. "Yes, I know," he said, closing the door behind him.

"'Lo Meg," he said. "Doing alright? I've been good."

"Daddy, come see Bob," Ben insisted, dragging Terry over to the cushion Bob was lying on. "Look at her belly! There are really PUPPIES in there!"

"Shh," Terry said, crouching down next to Bob and rubbing her firm belly. "We have to be quiet so we don't scare her, okay?"

Ben nodded and gave Terry a quick hug before running to his room to get his things.

Terry stroked Bob awhile longer, having missed her over the past few weeks. They'd decided it would be better for the dog to leave her at one flat for the majority of the time, so she hadn't come along with Ben to Terry for their overnights in a few weeks.

"Actually, now that I think about it, she probably will have the puppies this week," he said as he stood, looking over at Megan. "It's been about the right number of weeks."

"Hello Terry. I'm fine," she said, following them over to Bob's cushion. The dog was very sleepy these days, and other than a couple short walks a day, didn't move very much from her pillow.

"We should bring her up to the shelter then," Meg said practically. "To make sure everything is all right." She wasn't certain she was ready for the puppies, but nature never held its course just because humans weren't ready. "Would you like me to do that? I know you're busy at work, and it's probably easier for me to ask for time off from the shop, than for you to stop an experiment."

Terry looked up at Meg from over his shoulder, and smiled. Trust her to think of practicalities. "If you could, I'd appreciate it," he said, standing. "If anything's the matter though, owl me and I'll come up."

This felt very familiar, and yet foreign at the same time. He hadn't gone to any of her prenatal appointments with her while she was pregnant with Ben. Hadn't been able, or willing, to take time off from work for that.

"I'm sorry," he said suddenly. She looked at him oddly. "That I'm more involved in Bob's pregnancy than I was in yours. I guess I was pretty rotten."

"Okay, I'll make an appointment for later this week," Megan said. "And don't worry, from what I've read, Bob's doing fine. She's perfectly healthy, Terry. I promise."

She knew what he was thinking, could see it written all over that guilty face. He was remembering her pregnancy, and how he'd never made it to an Midwife appointment with her. She remembered how scared and alone she'd felt, but had never held it against him.

"You weren't," she said suddenly. "But it wasn't your fault. It was war, Terry. And you...had other things to think about. I never blamed you. You know that right?" It was important to her for him to know that she'd never held his indifference to her pregnancy against him. As soon as Ben had been born, he'd taken to fatherhood wonderfully. Well, with a few lapses here and there when he'd been taken in by a new Charm.

In any case, it was in the past and there was no need to rehash old hurts now. They both needed to move forward. "Anyway, I'll owl the vet this week, and make an appointment."
