"Yes, sir, Mr. Robards?" his voice wavered a bit. This had to be about Saturday. Rita Skeeter had threatened to tell Mr. Robards; obviously she had. It would probably be best to confess fully. "Sir, I can explain about Saturday...at the Prophet offices...it was incredibly stupid of me."

Aside from raising his eyebrows slightly, he showed no reaction to the news. He wasn't about to solidify wild guesses regarding the incident; the vague possibilities caused some concern. Had the damage--if there had indeed been any damage--been terrible, Gawain felt that he would have heard something by now. And Ernie hardly seemed the Auror to cause any difficulties.
Yet here it was, and something must have happened. That or the boy was overreacting. Best to let him speak. "Yes? I should like to hear your explanation." Stern, though not overbearing. Gawain waited, watching the boy closely.

He pulled out his map from his desk and pointed to several properties on the southwest side of town. "These are actually empty. I've checked. Obviously, the Prophet building is occupied. And Ms. Skeeter showed up when I broke the wards. Which I didn't feel, sir. I handled the situation badly as I'm sure she's told you. But...I didn't know who was there."
Ernie stopped talking, suddenly winded from that explanation. He took a deep breath. "I...I'm prepared to accept whatever disciplinary action you'd feel is appropriate, Mr. Robards, sir." He forced himself to meet his boss's gaze, however, painful it was to do so.

Of course Ernie hadn't been assigned to such tasks; he hadn't the preferred qualifications, the caution best used. Patrolling abandoned buildings wasn't a terribly far step from general patrolling, but it was enough--especially when the boy seemed to have been working alone--to cause concern ( ... )
