She seemed cheerful. He expected her to make some mention of her previous evening, or ask about his, but no. Not a word. Not about who she'd seen, or where she'd gone. And then she wasn't even letting him answer her questions but distractedly racing off onto a topic that had nothing to do with anything...
Why was she avoiding the subject?
An answer to her question had already formed in his mind, but when he opened his mouth to speak, what came out was, "So you got home late, didn't you?"

He was going to ask, she just knew he was going to ask who she'd been out with and he knew she would be unable to lie to him. It wasn't exactly a huge secret she'd reconciled with her sister, but she'd been reluctant to tell him knowing how he felt about her family.

"Not much. I got your owl. That was a bit of a short notice, don't you think?" Why was he so upset about this? He shook his head, but the irritation was still there, and apparently it had control of his tongue. "Didn't you think I'd be worried when you didn't get home on time?"

"Will you hear her out please? If after she's told you her story and you are still unconvinced, fine. But at least give her a chance. Please."

She was being duped; it wasn't right to blame her for that, he tried to tell himself. Andy was often trusting to a fault with those she loved, and no doubt Narcissa had fed her a very pretty tale of her own trials, something designed to exploit that side of her sister's character.
He lowered his voice a notch or two and continued more calmly, although his heart raced anxiously, desperate to open Andy's eyes to the danger she'd put herself in.
"Look. I know you love your sister, your whole family, that you never stopped loving them all this time. But that doesn't mean that you should trust them. You're basing your opinion of this new Narcissa on a few conversations, when you have twenty years worth of evidence that weighs against whatever she's told you ( ... )

Andy could feel her mouth pursing and her eyes narrowing in anger. "So you're saying I can't trust my own instincts? Can't people change for the better? She realizes that her involvement, however small it was, was a mistake! She's trying to correct her mistakes by moving on with her life and doing good deeds. She owns her own shop now. Ted . . . she's alone. Her husband is Merlin knows where, she's estranged from her son, she keeps so tightly to herself that she has very few friends. I'm the only family she has!"
Noticing his reaction, her anger drained away and was quickly replaced with worry. "Ted, please calm down. You're making this out to be a bigger deal than it is. Take deep breaths. It'll be ok, I promise."

His chest felt tight. "It's not okay! This is not okay, Andy! Why did you take this step without me? Couldn't you have waited to talk to me about it first?"
