It was odd to expect company. In a way, it felt almost civilized and made Hermione realize that things had definitely changed. During their travels, they'd stayed in some places for several days at a time, so a part of her still kept thinking they'd soon have to pack up and leave. Her bag hadn't been unpacked, she'd not done much with her new room at all, and she'd procastinated on actually starting the cleaning and repairs yesterday because of that nagging voice that told her it wasn't safe to get comfortable ( ... )

Viktor got off the bicycle and unstuck his basket, then looked around for a place to lean the bike. Against the side of the house would do. It only took a moment to put an anti-theft charm on it, not that he was terribly worried about that, and then he started toward the door.

Movement nearby caught his eye, and he turned to look back into the garden. "Hermione?" he said. "You are. You have." He gestured toward his own face with his free hand. "I am not have this word. With hurts that show. But you look nice to see." He walked toward her, holding up the basket. "I have bring lunch, if this is accept? Is only sandwich."

"You can say my name," she said, smiling shyly. It was more of a crooked grimace, since she wasn't really used to smiling very much these days, but she was proud of the effort and hoped he'd see it as a smile. "It's nice to see you, Viktor ( ... )

"You are say you just have arriving. I am think, you maybe not have time to buy. Or razm--dis is not English word. Giving item to have item give. So, I bring."

He noticed her step back and apology, and tilted his head. "I am not to hurt, Hermione. And yes, I have learn many things, like name." He handed her the basket and kept enough distance not to be threatening.

She was relieved when he didn't question or push her on the top of the war. She wasn't ready to talk about that to anyone, really, but especially not to someone who didn't really know or understand what it had been like. His change of subject was appreciated.

"Well, if she's nearly five, she might be reading basic words," she said. "I was reading by five, but children progress at various different levels. She'd probably love to have you read to her, though."

"A hundred pairs of shoes?" She blinked and wondered if he was joking. "Why on earth would anyone want that many shoes? You can only wear one pair at a time, after all. I've only got two pairs, sturdy boots and comfortable trainers. I'd say you definitely had more sense than the previous owner."

"Yes," Viktor agreed. "It very silly. With..." He mimed with his hands "Like, like lead? On dog? Dat like, with go around leg, up up up with cross." He made an X with his fingers. "From little shoe with pointy under! Is most not sense shoe make ever!"

He laughed. "I save some shoe, in room I am make for Maire. Little girls play with dress I think. Most, I have put with rubbish."

"Perhaps you will know, what would be right book. I am, I think word is not having clues. I am not mean right now. Some other day."

Ron had awakened late that morning after a long night's sleep. He was finally starting to feel halfway human again. Their new house had a bathroom just for him and Harry, and he took advantage of it as best he could that morning, taking a shower that must have lasted 20 minutes and probably drained the water heater. Were he not a wizard he'd probably be in trouble with his house mates, so he was thankful for heating charms. He threw on a long-sleeved tee-shirt and some jeans and headed downstairs. Now he was not only clean but very hungry ( ... )

"You know, you might consider taking them into Exeter and donating them to a resale shop," she pointed out. "It seems a waste to just toss them in the rubbish if a charity might be able to sell them. Depending on your, uh, monetary situation, you could possibly even sell them as used to a Muggle trader ( ... )
