It was odd to expect company. In a way, it felt almost civilized and made Hermione realize that things had definitely changed. During their travels, they'd stayed in some places for several days at a time, so a part of her still kept thinking they'd soon have to pack up and leave. Her bag hadn't been unpacked, she'd not done much with her new room at all, and she'd procastinated on actually starting the cleaning and repairs yesterday because of that nagging voice that told her it wasn't safe to get comfortable ( ... )

Viktor got off the bicycle and unstuck his basket, then looked around for a place to lean the bike. Against the side of the house would do. It only took a moment to put an anti-theft charm on it, not that he was terribly worried about that, and then he started toward the door.

Movement nearby caught his eye, and he turned to look back into the garden. "Hermione?" he said. "You are. You have." He gestured toward his own face with his free hand. "I am not have this word. With hurts that show. But you look nice to see." He walked toward her, holding up the basket. "I have bring lunch, if this is accept? Is only sandwich."

"You can say my name," she said, smiling shyly. It was more of a crooked grimace, since she wasn't really used to smiling very much these days, but she was proud of the effort and hoped he'd see it as a smile. "It's nice to see you, Viktor ( ... )

"You are say you just have arriving. I am think, you maybe not have time to buy. Or razm--dis is not English word. Giving item to have item give. So, I bring."

He noticed her step back and apology, and tilted his head. "I am not to hurt, Hermione. And yes, I have learn many things, like name." He handed her the basket and kept enough distance not to be threatening.

"You were right," she said. "We've not had time to buy much of anything yet. Lunch is very appreciated. If Ron figures out there's food down here, we might very well have a surprise visit."

She relaxed slightly when he kept distance between them and moved slowly, though she remained alert. She smiled wryly. "I know you're not, Viktor," she said honestly. "It's just not something I can turn on or off." Realizing that he might not understand, she grew thoughtful. "It's like you and Quidditch. If someone threw something at you, you'd instinctively reach out to catch it because it's how you were trained. This is just me now. At least, it is currently."

She took the basket and asked, "Would you prefer to eat inside or outside? I know it's rather cool out here, so I don't mind going inside to catch up if you'd prefer. There's a dining table inside or an outdoor table in the back."

Viktor nodded. "I see, and I am understand. Is not for think, is for body learn to stop have own idea. Perhaps I give you hug later. For this time," he stopped and grinned, then reached with one hand, pinching her forearm lightly. "Dis very small hug."

He looked around. "Is cool, yes, but if open space is better for reflex, is word in English also, you say? Is okay. Or inside."

Hermione blinked at him, looking from her arm back to him. Slowly, she smiled and reached up to tuck a lock of hair behind her ear. "Small hugs are nice," she said.

"Well, we can eat outside, but, if you get too cold, we can inside," she decided. "Of course, compared to Bulgaria, this is almost warm for November."

She led him around the house to the back. "It's almost like a jungle," she said, "but I've grown to like it, I think. It needs some work, as does the house, but it's going to be lovely in the spring. How are you?"

"I am well. I have only a few days before now, come here. It has take time, after Quidditch end, to think, I should come, but as I am say in letter, daughter is more close from here. Her mother is not think, she should come stay, Bulgaria."

He followed her around the house into the back. "Will be pretty, yes. Will require, yes, working. You are like to dig in dirt, Hermione? This is new, I think."

He paused. "And how are you, except with bruising, you have said, and reflex?"

"You mentioned a daughter in your letter," she said curiously. "I didn't realize you had any children. Is she your only one? How old is she? The mother is from Britain then?"

She set the basket on the table and waited until he joined her before she sat down. She looked around and shrugged. "I don't particularly like to dig in the dirt, but I do like being outside. Walls can get confining, you know? It's more vulnerable being out where you have to keep an eye on so many directions, but it's more comfortable for me right now."

"I'm fine," she lied smoothly. "As well as can be expected considering everything, and still alive, which is what really matters. Have you decided what you plan to do without Quidditch?"

Viktor nodded. "She is only, unless someone is forget to tell me. Her mother is Ireland, um. Person who enjoy Quidditch." He felt his face heating, because really, explaining to Hermione that he'd been not at all reticent about letting Quidditch hangers-on into his bed... it wasn't that he was particularly embarrassed that he'd had sex; he was twenty-eight years old. It was just, he'd known Hermione when they were both teenagers, and she'd been one to see him as interesting and something more than just The Seeker, and here he was seeing her for the first time in years and, well, it just felt odd.

He shifted his weight on the seat. "She will have five years this winter. I was young when she is born, and it is not quickly I think, I must be present. Now, I think." He started taking sandwiches out of the basket. "I have see, with visiting, but now I am hope she comes stay more time. Would you like to see picture?"

A groupie. The mother of Viktor's daughter was a Quidditch groupie. It wasn't that Hermione was disappointed because, well, he was nearly thirty and she doubted many men would resist that temptation. In a way, she felt sorry that this woman probably never saw beyond the fame and fortune to actually know the man who had accidentally fathered a child.

"I'm sure she's wonderful," she said confidently. "I can't imagine any child of yours being anything else. You being closer to her will be good for both of you, I expect. A child should have access to its parents, I think. She'll be a better person having you in her life, even just during visits. And I'd love to see a photograph."

"She is very smart," Viktor said. "You probably like her. I am not know what to do with child, but I will learn." He nodded, then pulled a small photograph out of his wallet. "Dis Maire. She is not look as me," he said, tapping his nose. "Is good for her."

"Oh, she's adorable," Hermione said sincerely, though she had to admit that the little girl could have been a long lost Weasley.

"Her name is Maire?" She looked up and smiled slightly. "You look fine, as you very well know. I trust that you'll learn what to do with her. You've always been bright...for a Quidditch player," she added the last as a soft tease.

"Her mother is name her. Is Maire Victoria, at least." Viktor grinned. "Yes, for Quidditch player. But I am do Wronski Feint. You? Are not. Still, you are brave enough. For ...studying person. Dat is not sound good. There is word, yes? For person who is always read?"

His grin faded. "But, of soonest days, you are not read, are you? You are have bruising." He held up his hands. "I am not meaning ask what you, what you hide? But if you are want say, is okay too."

"It's a pretty name," she said. "Bookworm? Swot? I've heard several others, many not very flattering. I suppose that bookworm is most acceptable."

"Oh, I've still read," she told him honestly, not mentioning that all she read these days were spell books and magical history and anything else that might help them during the war or on their hunt.

"There was fighting, and I was injured," she said. "It's just a few scratches and bruises. The worst is mostly healed by now. So, you moved recently? These are delicious sandwiches, by the way. Thank you again for bringing them."

So she didn't want to talk about it. He wasn't surprised. Probably that would be a long time, he thought. "Bookworm," he agreed. "I do mean as nice word, Hermione. Perhaps Maire will be. Bookworm. But I think she is not read yet."

He bit his lip. "I think I must read for her. Dis is perhaps more frighten than Wronski Feint."

He finished his sandwich. "Recently! This is word that means soon before now. Good. Yes, I move recently. I find perhaps one hundred couples of shoe, all with making very tall. I am much more sense owner of house."
