Although he could have apparated from the Five Alarm and his earlier conversation with Wayne, Ernie decided to walk to River Place. He needed to figure out what he was going to say to Megan. Busting in and babbling about how he was attracted to her as more than a friend (I think she might have a pretty good idea from the kissing, the little voice had piped up) was probably not the best idea.

He needed to be calm, cool, and collected. Like James Bond. Those had been some other movies he'd liked. However, rather than a tuxedo, Ernie was dressed in jeans and one of his work shirts. He hadn't exactly planned on having this date.

Finding himself in front of River Place, he took a deep breath and began climbing the stairs. At the fifth floor, he ducked into the corridor and found 5-B.

"Hi, Meg," he said by way of practice. "Hello, Megan. Meg, how are you?" He shook his head. What was he going to say?

It felt so strange to be leaving the flat entirely empty. Megan paused at the door and did a mental inventory. Ben and Bob were at Terry's; she had her bag and her key and a wrap to protect against the chill. She didn't have a date or any plans, but she'd have to improvise. Satisfied, she nodded to herself and stepped out into the hallway.

...And nearly ran into Ernie MacMillan. She almost dropped her bag, but caught it and put a hand against the wall to steady herself. Did she miss an owl? Or did she misread the one that she remembered getting? A quick glance up and down told her Ernie didn't exactly look like he was coming to get her for a night out. Maybe he'd decided to cancel in person.

"Hi," she said finally.

"Meg, I..." He broke off when he got a good look at her. If the black dress had shown him a new side of Megan the other night, the red dress...well, there were no words. At least no words that Ernie thought would be proper.

On second thought, why was she wearing that dress? Had she made plans?

You did cancel on her.

Well, she'd just have to stand up whomever she was meeting. And that was that.

"I came to take you out. On our date," he said matter-of-factly.

"Oh," Megan said, then, "Oh!" She glanced down at herself and then at Ernie. "I... should I change? I can change in just a minute. Where are we going?" She couldn't help the grin that spread across her face as she re-opened her door and motioned Ernie inside. She was going to go out on a date after all, on New Year's Eve and with no Ben to take care of when she got home!

Ernie withdrew his wand from his jacket. He'd come close to kissing Meg again while they were dancing, but the middle of the dance floor was no place for that.

After ensuring that she was holding onto him, he concentrated on their location. A moment later, they were at the top of the hill and he was a bit disoriented. Once he'd righted himself, he looked at her.

"C'mon," he said with a grin, taking her by the hand and leading her to the spot he'd found about a month ago. All of Stoatshead lay below them, lights twinkling in the buildings that were occupied and glinting off the river as it split the town in two.

"I...I haven't shown anyone else this." Hopefully, she wouldn't think it was stupid.

Megan had to watch her step in the starlight to avoid turning an ankle on the rough ground, so when Ernie came to a stop and she was able to look up, the view caught her entirely by surprise.

"Oh..." she breathed. "It's beautiful."

She took another step forward, taking Ernie's hand with her, and gazed out on the town. The moon was almost full, and there was enough light falling on the scattered buildings that the scene had a silvery tint to it.

But Meg had always been nervous around full moons, and she shivered a bit in the cool night air, giving Ernie's hand an almost imperceptible squeeze.

Ernie was unable to help the smile that crossed his face at her words. He'd been right to show this to Meg. He watched her as she took a step forward; she really was beautiful. And not just in an outward way, she was a good person, a fun person, a warm person.

Except she was shivering. That wouldn't do at all. Ernie let go of her hand, moving behind her. He wasn't going to chicken out. Not again, he decided, as he slipped his arms around her waist and pulled her back against him.

"Better?" he whispered in her ear.

Ernie was warm, and solid, and Megan no longer wondered if this was a dream. His breath tickled her ear and she leaned into him, covering his arms with her own. Oh, this was nice.

"Much better," she said, snuggling closer. Her dress wasn't designed to be worn out in this sort of weather, and the wrap was almost more decorative than functional - Apparating usually didn't mean a lot of time outside - but having Ernie's arms wrapped around her made up for any cold she was feeling.

Slowly, she leaned her head back until it was resting on his shoulder. From there it was inevitable that she would turn slightly, trying to breathe in more of him, and if their lips were only inches apart, well, that was a pleasant side effect, wasn't it?
