Megan hadn't really known what to make of Ernie's owl cancelling the non-date, but she wasn't about to sit at home on New Year's Eve. She'd already spent the afternoon soaking in the tub, doing her nails, digging out another old dress - red, this time, for the festive occasion - and getting ready for a "practice" date.
At first she'd considered just dressing up a nice pair of jeans and a jumper, since it would be a lot more comfortable than another dress and heels. After all, it was just practice. But when she remembered the conversation with Ernie the other night - and the kissing, if she was being honest with herself - she thought it would be better to go all out, and act like it was the real thing. After all, her aunt had always said you play like you practice.
But then Ernie's owl had swooped in. She hadn't realized just how much she'd been looking forward to going out until then, and there was no way she was just going to mope around and go to bed early. She was almost ready anyway, and Bob and Ben were both out of the house for the night, so why not go out and have fun by herself?
That's what she would do. She finished getting ready, put a tube of lip gloss and a few other things into a tiny beaded handbag, and headed for the door.
