we are stardust He remembers wondering once, a time that feels so long ago now, if it was stardust that ran through her veins.
(for what else could make her shine the way that she does?)
He now knows it to be true as they sit side by side on the TARDIS grating, thighs touching, feet dangling through the open doors, floating high above Paris.
She holds up one delicate hand and he watches as a line appears on the skin of her palm. He wonders if it hurts but she appears to feel no pain as the blood wells up and her lips curve slightly as she stares at her hand. She moves it from side to side, letting the blood coat her palm, and then she turns her hand over and gives it a shake.
Crimson droplets fly from her skin and he swears they shine as they fall, looking for all the world like tiny shooting stars streaking towards the city. The lights seem to shine brighter wherever the droplets hit and her smile widens.
He stares at her profile, admiring it as he always does, wondering how she could have become even more beautiful than she was before.
She turns her gaze towards him and he can see the little golden glint in her eyes, can feel the energy she radiates.
She is power and benevolence, strength and love, vengeance and compassion. She is a contradiction in every way.
She slides forward and into space, standing on nothing as she turns towards him and holds out her uninjured hand.
He allows her to pull him out with her, apprehension flickering deep within him. He knows how to fly; he's just never done it without wings.
She gently pulls her hand from his and his hearts leap as his fingers clutch instinctively at her jacket. He's not used to being afraid but things have been different ever since she changed.
She smiles at him and it calms him, his grip relaxing on her jacket as he stands beside her.
She raises her hands to her mouth, holding them together with her palms facing up, and takes a deep breath.
Her breath shimmers when she exhales, a stream of glittering vapor that runs the length of her palms and into the air, tumbling over the ends of her fingers like diamonds.
He watches as the glowing current swirls around them, above their heads and below their feet, and he takes a breath, inhaling some of her stardust, taking part of her essence and mixing it with his own.
Her hands fall to her sides and he looks at her, taking in her serene smile and noticing that she's glowing now, independent of the atmosphere around them.
He thinks he should be afraid of her, but he loves her too much for that and a smile curves his lips as he takes her hand in his.
Show me the stars, she says, tongue poking between her teeth as she grins widely.
He laughs and touches his lips to hers, his hands diving into her hair, his fingers tangling in the soft golden strands.
You are the stars, he murmurs against her mouth, and she smiles.
