In ancient times, people thought that the soul was made up of the same 'stuff' that angels and daemons were made of. The soul was not immaterial like we see it now - the soul was something very physical. You could project your soul out of your body to curse other people (the idea of the 'evil eye'). Have you read the books then? They're amazing - if you haven't, I highly recommend them (and they'd be great to read to the kiddies too!)

I haven't read them, but I did send this website to Dr. Smith (you know, so he can see I am a v. serious scholar and whatnot). I haven't even heard of them! But I think I will check them out!

My daemon was originally a butterfly, but it's morphed into a fox. What's yours?

Mine's a whippet named Aeschylus. He hasn't changed yet. In the books, people with dog daemons are generally servants. Hrm... ;)

Definitely read the books if you get a chance - I'd lend them to you but they're already out on loan to another friend. They're in my top three for children's fantasy - right up there with L'Engle and C.S. Lewis.
