WTF, New York? Is this even legal?

See, this is why I'm a libertarian. This is the third nannying resolution (that I know of) that NYC has passed; the first was banning smoking in bars, and the second was banning trans fat in restaurants. Sooo many people think that the government can stop any activity it wants, as long as "everybody" agrees it's distasteful or wrong. Sometimes NY seems to me more like an alien planet or California than a city in my own country.

YEah, even solely on the position of Free Speech, you can't tell someone they can't say something on a universal level like that. What, are they going to ban materials now? Songs, books, poems, art? Where does it stop?

Instead of dealing with what the issue really is they're trying to make it into an easily packaged and solvable problem, which, please stop treating me like I'm Screech on Saved by the Bell. Seriously.

You know, I don't see what the big deal is. I think it's a good idea to ban the word entirely. It's not as if white folk are banning it in a transparent attempt to cover up the fact that they only use hatred and bigotry to hide their inferiority complex, and keep an entire race of people from unifying so they don't demand TRUE equality in this country..........oh wait........

But banning it changes everything. Obviously folks are only using that word because it's legal.

What is up with New York these days? Don't they have anything better to do with their time, like, oh I don't know... actually trying to work on fixing the things that CAUSE racist behavior? I know! Let's ban everything! Yes, everything! If we ban everything then nothing will be the matter. Freaking New York.

First they came for the transfats, and I said nothing. Then they came for the "n-word"...

It's nice to paint a pretty patina of do-gooding on profoundly complex social problems. It doesn't actually help, but gee, it makes us white folks feel better. Good job, New York!

Your friend the honkey,
Katie

PS. My annoyance at this patina crap overtook me, but good dressing down there, S. Just *perfectly* done.

I love that, like the N-word is medicinal marijuana! And yeah, I was up at about 4am hashing this mess out. The whole this is so infuriating. There's more at the blackfolk link in the comments about it.
