Very Late Meta

Eleven steals all the scenes, doesn't he? I don't know why I've suddenly noticed this now, but whatever was happening in the scene before he's there, it all quickly gets diverted into what Eleven's doing afterwards.

Nine said 'I'm the Doctor, now forget me' and Rose could have done just that, if she hadn't been looking for some way out of her life ( Read more... )

This hadn't occurred to me until I read this but it's so true! Even when people are kissing around him, he inevitably interrupts.

(Also, thanks for mentioning my AU piece. It's weird (and fun!) to see that I wrote something that illustrates a part of his characterization that I wasn't even consciously aware of until reading your meta.)

That's one of the best things about writing, as far as I'm concerned; you want to write a character doing something because it feels right and only later do you work out why they were doing it... As a matter of interest, how did you get to writing him the way you did in that, if that's a question that can be answered?

Oooh, I love talking characterization! So sorry if I answer this WAY more in-depth than you were planning. As to your question . . . Hm, I'm guessing you mean why did I write him the way I did when he was a human professor in that story, since technically I wrote him twice in Timeless Dreams. However, I can't really explain why I wrote him one way in that story without explaining why I wrote him the other way as well. So, I will be referencing both ( ... )

Now, the characterization of the Doctor as the human professor was meant to balance that. He's human. He's also more specific. I didn't just want him to be recognizably the Doctor, I wanted him to be recognizably a specific man. In this case, Eleven because he has the best on screen chemistry with River. Also, because the other storyline was the POV of the Doctor looking at and becoming infatuated/falling in love with River, this storyline is from the POV of River becoming infatuated/falling in love with the Doctor. So though the man would be very young compared to her, he needed to overcome that enough for her to look beyond that. I still needed to make them equals. On the show, this is accomplished by the fact that though River looks older and the Doctor actually IS older. But that didn't apply here. Age was a more conventional issue. So it wasn't enough to make him a professor instead of a student, because there is still a hierarchy in place amongst professors. I needed him to be a genius, a wunderkind. Also, I liked the ( ... )
