Gee, that's complement in my book. =)

But seriously, ma'am, I've been grappling with this issue regarding my sci-fi writing, which venomously anti-Patriarchal. Sexual repression is imho the primary tool Patriarchy uses to keep folks 'in line'. I got a whole screed on that in the pipe line.

Gee, that's complement in my book.

It's not entirely accurate, though. I'm more of a Trotskyist bi-sexual.

Yep, sexual repression wears many hats. Anti-abortion, anti-prostitution, anti-homosexuals, pro-virginity, anti-pre-marital sex.

If you are up for reading something really disturbing, check out the purity ball, where young girls make a vow to their dads that they won't have sex until they are married. It could only be creepier if the dads auctioned off their daughters' hymens to the highest bidder.

Ah, yes, we've had many rant on loveliness of purity balling over in dark_christian. To quote Bill The Cat, "Ack!"

I have a MySpace page for one reason: I friended a bunch of local bands I like, and lo and behold, discovered that people's managers search by interest lists. Soon I was getting e-mail that said things like "Eric Clapton wants to be your friend!" Who can resist? And, you know, various people who sell tie-dye shirts want to be my friend, and women who want me to buy designer jeans want to be my friend, and lots of other random people selling things want to be my friend. As far as I can tell MySpace is primarily a marketplace for pop culture as much as a social networking site.

That said...Rupert Murdoch owns interest in it, MySpace refused an ad objecting to big media consolidation that had Fox as a target (it's the single thing in my MySpace blog). I have never trusted the site or its owners any further than I could throw them. So while this is all troubling, it is not in the least surprising to me.

I would be very excited if a famous musician wanted to be my friend. I have avoided MySpace because I saw scrolling text there once. *g*

Initially, MySpace built Sentinel SAFE so that sex offenders could not create accounts. They gave up information to state attorney generals only after they were subpoenaed. They must have anticipated, however, that once they collected the data someone would ask for it.

I had a bunch of local folk singers on my interests list and my friends list, and suddenly Kathy Mattea wanted to be my friend! I thought at first maybe Kathy Mattea herself had done a search to see who had her listed and was so excited, but then two days later Suzy Bogguss also wanted to be my friend and they have the same manager, so I suspect it came from there.

But then I added the Beatles and big national musicians, and soon I had BIG FAMOUS people as well as lots of musicians I'd never heard of. I did discover some fantastic music from this, though, like Leela and Ellie Grace.

*feels shallow*

I despise My Space. It's loud and horrid and obnoxious. I have an account though, because some non-LJ friends/family have one and that's how we commnunicate. But I call it my Bitch Blog. Anyone who tries to friend me gets the third-degree: Who are you and why do you want to friend me solely on the fact that we have ONE interest in common, which is "don't want children"? And I am not a nice person so you wouldn't want to talk to me ( ... )

Dog is your co-pilot!

[My mom has that bumpersticker.]

I don't think any of us writing kinky fic are going to get arrested, but I am concerned about other consequences. I do not want to see my LJ listed at a site like "pedoblogtracker." Blech. That's the creepy thing about groups like WfI. They aren't interested in prosecutions, just smearing mud.

Dog IS my co-pilot! Well, more like navigator, as she has her own car seat right behind me. And best of all, she keeps quiet. Not a back-seat driver at all.

How's Her Nibs, btw? Settled in to her own Theocracy? Purring contentedly at her Personal Groom and Slaver?

Okay, I have to take issue with the comparison of what happened her on LJ and the CT demanding myspace turn over info on registered sex offender. No less than 6 girls in this state have been sexually assaulted, raped, and or kidnapped due to being contacted by their assaulter via MySpace. This is within CT alone.

To my knowledge no one has been a victim of sexual assault from LJ. I could be wrong, but having heard the news reports here about 13 and 14 yr old girls being raped, yeah, I'm going to back the state attorney general.

To me as a victim of rape, there is NO comparison.

The crimes, investigations, and arrests in Connecticut are what prompted state attorney generals to ask MySpace for data. The CT state attorney general, Blumenthal, has been pursuing it since 2006.

I know that and I support it. I had a convicted rapist stalking me at the last club I worked in.

ANY nudity, sexually explicit businesses or using the internet for such purpose is forbidden under most sex offenders parole or probation.

There is a HUGE difference between fanfic and making sure a predator doesn't strike again.

Yes LJ/6A over-reacted, but don't get all over myspace or any other site that is cooperating with law enforcement in checking their records for REGISTERED sex offenders.

That's all Blumenthal wants. He wants myspace to check their records against the list of know sex-offenders in this state to check for possible re-offenders.

Sorry, I thought it was clear in my original post I see a huge difference between what Connecticut did [the sting operations], and Six Apart's "We deleted them; problem solved!" approach.

As you said, some registered sex offenders are prohibited from using the Internet as part of their parole conditions, so getting a MySpace account is going to result in their arrest.

Did you look over MySpace's Sentinel SAFE program? It relies on registered sex offenders using their real names when they get accounts, which does not sound terribly effective.
