Okay, I have to take issue with the comparison of what happened her on LJ and the CT demanding myspace turn over info on registered sex offender. No less than 6 girls in this state have been sexually assaulted, raped, and or kidnapped due to being contacted by their assaulter via MySpace. This is within CT alone.

To my knowledge no one has been a victim of sexual assault from LJ. I could be wrong, but having heard the news reports here about 13 and 14 yr old girls being raped, yeah, I'm going to back the state attorney general.

To me as a victim of rape, there is NO comparison.

The crimes, investigations, and arrests in Connecticut are what prompted state attorney generals to ask MySpace for data. The CT state attorney general, Blumenthal, has been pursuing it since 2006.

I know that and I support it. I had a convicted rapist stalking me at the last club I worked in.

ANY nudity, sexually explicit businesses or using the internet for such purpose is forbidden under most sex offenders parole or probation.

There is a HUGE difference between fanfic and making sure a predator doesn't strike again.

Yes LJ/6A over-reacted, but don't get all over myspace or any other site that is cooperating with law enforcement in checking their records for REGISTERED sex offenders.

That's all Blumenthal wants. He wants myspace to check their records against the list of know sex-offenders in this state to check for possible re-offenders.

Sorry, I thought it was clear in my original post I see a huge difference between what Connecticut did [the sting operations], and Six Apart's "We deleted them; problem solved!" approach.

As you said, some registered sex offenders are prohibited from using the Internet as part of their parole conditions, so getting a MySpace account is going to result in their arrest.

Did you look over MySpace's Sentinel SAFE program? It relies on registered sex offenders using their real names when they get accounts, which does not sound terribly effective.

Okay, then I misread the OP, and for that I apologize. Rough week and all.

And don't underestimate the stupidity of sex offenders. The rapist that was stalking me at MG2 told people he had a conviction but he made it sound as if the sex was consensual and she changed her mind afterwards.

Once the stalking (IE notes on my Jeep) started, I tracked down his PO. His conviction was for raping a comatose woman when he was a nurse, more than once apparently.

These guys aren't the brightest of the bunch and I guarantee that some of them will be stupid enough to register their accounts under their real names.

P.S. I just realized I hit "post comment" before I finished typing! That must have seemed random.

*lol* tis okay. I do agree we need to be aware of witch hunts, but in the case of trying to keep predators away from potential victims.

But just as we (fandom) don't want to be the victim of overzealous assholes, we also need to be vigilant that we don't become just as reactionary against legimate groups and law-enforcement trying to legimately do their jobs.
