I was listening to a recording of Bach's "Goldberg Variations" on my mp3 player and I noticed something inexplicably strange: there was someone talking or humming softly throughout the whole thing. I couldn't make out what, if anything, they were saying, but it was incredibly disconcerting. You don't expect people to ruin nice pieces like that ( Read more... )

Glenn Gould, whose Goldberg variations are very famous, always hummed/sang/emoted verbally while he was playing. It was one of his trademarks, I guess you could say. Actually, I know several extremely talented pianists who do this. They can't help it...the music just moves them so much, that it expresses itself verbally too.

I'm guessing the recording you have is Glenn Gould. He was a psychotic genious. Absolutely mad, OCD, but a genious musician.

You know, it was a Glenn Gould recording. Hmmm. That's interesting. For awhile, I thought it was actually something sinister, like a ghost or a zombie. However, I'm fairly intelligent and know that ghosts don't exist, so my options were either zombies or someone in the room of the recording. Huh. Fancy that.
