Hmmm, its only 10am, I've already been for a 40 minute walk, had breakfast, took a phone message for Derek, washed and done all my Internet-y stuff.

*tap tap tap*

That leaves an awfully long time for reading HP:GoF. And my attention pan won't hold out that long!

Must think of birthday present for artifussAnd have to make some icon room for Christmas ( Read more... )

Ooh ooh have you read The Count of Monte Cristo? That's one of my faves. It's quite long and sometimes it's a bit hard to keep track of all the characters, but the story is v. good (yay, revenge theme! haha) + The book is a million times better than the movie.

I also just bought Anna Karenina, but I haven't started reading yet, so I'll let you know if it's any good!

Have you read anything by Robin Hobb?

Yep, I've read The Count. Anna Karenina sort of scares me LOL. I'm not sure I could manage it :)

Haven't heard of Robin Hobb, I don't think. I'll check it out :) Thanks!

I was just going to post about Robin Hobb! She's the best fantasy author ever! The problem though (at least in the U.S.) is libraries never have all of her books, and you definitely can't read them out of order. Start with "Asassin's Apprentice" and that whole trilogy, then the "Mad Ship" trilogy, and then the "Golden Fool" trilogy... not that I'm obsessed.. *insert manical laughter that trails silently off*

Well, brother said that the library has Hobb's books so I'll check them out as soon as I've finished Harry :)

The Gormenghast Trilogy by Mervyn Peake (Titus Groan, Gormenghast and Titus Alone) and the Merlin Trilogy by Mary Stewart (The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment)

The Merlin Triology won't necessarily make you seem learned and well-read, but it's *great* :-)

Some classics that I liked:

Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Hmmm... It's been a while. hehe

Not a fan of Mark Twain myself. I don't know whether its because I had to read it at school or what :)

Haven't read any Dickens in a long time and then it was only Christmas Carol and Short Stories...

I have been so busy reading school work for the past, oh, 17 years 4 years that I've hardly read anything just for leisure.

Ah, I know what you mean. I was forced to read The Hobbit in school and I absolutely hated it so had no desire to read LOTR. (The movies were okay, but not my cup of tea, really.) I also had to read Of Mice & Men and hated that equally as much. In fact, most things I was forced to read for school ended up being things I mostly disliked. It must be the rebel in me. hehe I have a problem with authority. :-)

I only read Twain for pleasure. As a teen, I read all of his books that I could find--even some odd and obscure ones.

I also read Great Expectations for fun ( ... )

It's so hard to know what others will like since taste is so subjective

Absolutely - but I'm open to anything at least once ;) I like such a broad range of genres that I'm pretty easy to please plot-wise. Its really a matter of writing style on the part of the author that determines whether I like a book or not.

I'll see whether the library has any OSC then :)
