Swancon 39 2014 Conjuration

Apr 27, 2014 22:12

Over the Easter break I made my annual pilgrimage to Swancon, the annual WA speculative fiction convention. I stayed at the con hotel and was able able to attend the entire event (off and on) from opening to closing ceremony. I only had my phone with me so made short posts to Facebook rather than longer con reports here. "Proper" con reports are ( Read more... )

I forgot to credit Livecon and the air conditioning in my con accessibility notes - thanks! Those were both very useful things. Yes, a small powerchair could get around the art show, but not at the same time that anyone else went around, but in practice this wasn't a problem.

In future cons, which we hope to be at, if you want to go out for a bite or shop you could maybe buzz me and borrow my powerchair if I'm resting? (It's not the greatest chair for outdoors, being a portable, but maybe better than nothing?) And now I'm wondering if it would ever be practical for the con itself to rent a good outdoor powerchair for members to hire for an hour or two, to get out for a meal. Or for a few individuals to go in together on this. Hm. I also have a spare manual chair that I could bring if that would be useful for you or anyone else.

The hotel also provided me with a microwave which I definitely count as an accessibility win. We have a small one on hand if needed but it's still very heavy and bulky.

That is good. They were also very helpful with parking & luggage for me, and there was a goodly-sized fridge in the room that was very useful.

Yes, the fridge was surprisingly roomy. Unfortunately the downside of a nicer hotel for next year is less chance of them supplying a microwave, and usually a tiny tiny fridge.

Enjoyed seeing you briefly, and was honoured that you liked the 'origin of costuming' costume.
