It was good to have clothes, this time round. Following his first day and night in the asylum Guo Jia had spent the previous day with a mild cough. Fortunately the cough had passed quickly; these corridors echoed and exploration required discretion, especially in the wake of the so-called nurse's attacks. "You did not take long," Cao Pi commented when the strategist entered, not even casting a glance at his direction. It was that particular way Guo Jia walked, light and calm, that made it easy enough to tell who his visitor was; not that many people came to visit him to begin with, other than Nunnally (who had no footsteps to begin with), the guards (heavier and brisker, as if their mere approach was meant to be intimidating already), or Guo Jia himself.

But he walked down the hallway with enough security and sense of a target that it was clear that he knew where he was going. They passed cell by cell, and he only walked slow enough to be silent - to avoid unnecessary attention and to be prepared in case they would encounter somebody.

It suited him to leave Guo Jia a little in the dark. It was not an issue of trust, but Cao Pi was a man who rarely spoke more of things than he had to. He was used to keeping his opinions and plans to himself, under the tight seal of silence of a man who was waiting for his day and for the right time. And so, he avoided letting Guo Jia know more than he had to; he wanted him somewhat unprepared even. Guo Jia could probably tell. It was at the same time his first ( ... )
