The last few days - the last two days to be more specific, after he had woken up in this cold, dark hole - had not been particularly eventful with exception of this particular circumstance. He still had no recollection of how he had been captured or how he had been brought here, all the way to a foreign country, and - as a simple look out of the window betrayed - somewhere in the mountains. He could not fathom how they had done this, taken him from the centre of his troops without alerting the entire capital, or why or by whom he had been brought into this prison which the guards for some reason insisted on calling an "asylum" - a place of healing for all he understood

In the darkness, the only way to read the numbers upon the cell doors was to stand literally before them. Fortunately there were few, once he had established which was the right direction. It felt entirely strange to note that the numbers took such odd shapes, yet were still instantly recognisable

Cao Pi had turned around at the sound of the door opening; this was a surprise in a way. He had not expected the man to go through with his announcement, and that he really had not expected it only really became clear to him now

Guo Jia would not insult Cao Pi's intelligence by stating the obvious; there was no apparent explanation for that within their current reach. It was impossible by any stretch of the imagination.

Instead he merely replied, "Daren is satisfied that I am sincere?"

He darted his gaze to the box on the wall, then made the conscious decision to switch to their mother tongue.

"It was my Lord's illustrious father who said that one should not employ the questionable, nor question the employed. I serve Lord Cao faithfully until death. Shall it come today? Or in seven years' time?"
