Who would protect Shira? Edgeworth found it hard to believe that the man had friends at all, that any associates he might have were anything better than brigands and murderers who helped him merely from their mutual criminality. That Sumeragi claimed him as a friend ( ... )

Edelweiss had stripped away Subaru's psychic ability, yet he still had a keen sixth sense--which alerted him immediately to Edgeworth's presence before the man passed into his line of vision. Swiftly the former exorcist got to his feet, bowing his head politely ( ... )

It was strange, in this place, to meet someone so polite. Few seemed to value the least among social norms. Social barriers were quickly overcome, the rules of propriety flagrantly ignored; few had any regard for keeping from your fellows a respectful distance and, in point of fact, rather scorned those who did ( ... )

Nodding cordially, Subaru waited for the other man to seat himself then did the same, back upright and hands folded. He recalled dimly a time when he'd meet with his grandmother to discuss his life as the head of the Sumeragi, and how furious she would have been with him if he hadn't sat up straight. Quirking a small smile despite himself, he kept his gaze fixed on Edgeworth, hoping the other wouldn't be unnerved by his two-colour eyes the way many others seemed to be ( ... )

"It was not," Edgeworth replied, and said nothing more, and that made him strangely uneasy. It shouldn't have. The fact remained that Sumeragi had lied, and therefore he was most likely aiding and abetting a criminal, either Shira or himself; the mere fact of his lying made him suspect. And one did not simply explain to a suspect one's methodology. One did not explain the reason for being there. One did not share details. Yet even so, Sumeragi seemed - decent. Reeve trusted him. And with his quiet manner and small smile - Edgeworth certainly did not like him, as he had only ever exchanged a few words with him, and as Sumeragi had lied directly in the course of a criminal investigation - but nevertheless he seemed the sort who was quite likable, and evading his questions in such a way seemed rude ( ... )

Edgeworth's demeanor had not changed; it was still severe, direct, impossible to dissuade or distract. Not like Subaru had much intention of doing so. Manipulation had arrived to Seishirou easily, came just as effortlessly to the Kamui. It was not like Subaru to lie; he had spent many years upholding a moral code that had been instilled within him at birth, and yet here he was--concealing an identity that, when revealed, would destroy him forever ( ... )

In spite of himself, Edgeworth looked away when Sumeragi scrutinized him, the intensity of the gaze no less unsettling than the man's polychromatic eyes. Had he given something away when he spoke? In his pronunciation of Monou's name, perhaps, in the expression on his face...He hadn't intended to. He wished he could simply put that whole experience with the man out of his mind, wished he could be unaffected by what had happened, by that illusion that had taken him in so thoroughly...He wished he could speak the man's name neutrally, and he'd thought he had ( ... )

The slight smile never fully left Subaru's face, even as he was borderline scolded by the other man who couldn't have been much older than him. He couldn't help it; he recalled a time when a simple admonishment would have him bowing and apologizing profusely, as if he'd committed some dire crime. Now, it did little more than ruffle him ( ... )

It was strange how Sumeragi's words raised a rather genuine anger in Edgeworth. He kept his face as neutral as possible, but even so felt compelled to turn his face away to hide his momentary scowl. This was an investigation. It wouldn't do to reveal anything, even his own emotional state, to a suspect. Even so -

Even so, Sumeragi, who had seemed so polite, whom Edgeworth certainly had not liked as he was not the sort of person who would leap so casually to liking someone but whom Reeve liked, and who again had been so polite - a rare quality here...He spoke of apathy towards the fate of the world. Edgeworth did not believe that Kamui - Monou - was indeed some sort of Messiah as he claimed. He did not believe the man was indeed capable of destroying the world. Yet it was clear that Sumeragi did, and Sumeragi had nevertheless stood by, uncaring ( ... )

There it was. The anger, the distrust. Subaru had expected it, but it was somewhat of a disappointment that it had arrived so soon. Regardless, his demeanor did not change, though he could not ignore the way his heart stung by the blatant disapproval in the other's eyes ( ... )
