They're called 'loupes' and I've been able to find the kind that clip on to glasses by searching for 'loupe glasses' on Google.

Do a search for Ben Franklin Glasses National Treasure. You should find pictures of the prop. Might be to your liking.

True, but I'm always a bit dubious about paint. Mainly concerns about it cracking or peeling or just looking a bit crap. Still, even nickel or steel finish is better than no groovy lenses at all :-P

I think the lenses are removable by means of small screws.
If so then plating is possible if you're at all crafty.

Ive also seen them referred to as jewelers glasses (not precise I know but the interweb is all full up with incorrect jargon).
