I seem to be running across the  most fascinating things lately.

This is a short clip of an 18th century automate. A little before steampunk, sure, but definitely in the spirit of this community. These little robots were able to perform a variety of incredibly life-like tasks. It's hard to believe they were created centuries ago! There are MANY ( Read more... )

I know, right? I'm scared of dolls, so watching these is transfixing and terrifying at once - but I can't stop!

As in i was made in the 1700's?
Really?

I just find it so hard to believe that they could've made something like this so long ago!

Is this an original that was actually made in that time period or a replica? Because for an original it looks to be in smashing good shape.

Now I must go look at more automata clips. . . .

Yes, actually made in the 1700s! And original! I can imagine that people took immensely good care of them, although not all have survived in such good shape.

She looks so lifelike it's absolutely freaky.

I've seen some of them! My favorite so far are the archers. Incredible.
