Rekindling My Lost Love?

May 11, 2011 11:14

After the leader of the local steampunk group took it upon himself to slander my dearest's name, mine in conjunction, and attempted to tarnish the reputation of a few of my close friends, Steampunk has sort of lost it's luster ( Read more... )

Is there an option that makes you feel more comfortable? I, personally, would love to tell you to just keep going and not even bother defending yourself to others but I realise that isn't always an option. Maybe shelving things and just wearing them for special occasions would be good for now and then incorporate your wardrobe more as you feel comfortable doing so.

(Also, apologies for my being nosy, but I am kind of intrigued as to what happened. No need to tell me, unless you feel like sharing.)

On second thought, that bit in parentheses should not even be in my comment. My apologies.

Don't worry about it. I don't blame you for being curious. :)

I'll probably just do garb for conventions, since it seems to be the path of least resistance.

The only problem I've every had with fandom is the other fans.

I live in a town of 60,000 people and our "steampunk community" (if you could even say there WAS one) is made up of about 10 people who I don't think have all ever been in the same room with each other.

You need to take yourself aside, have a battenberg and a lovely cup of tea with yourself and ask, "Is this about the 'style and trappings' or is this about the other people who are into this?"

Eff 'em. If anyone asks if you're associated with them, just smile and say "No, I just like the aesthetic." Don't let them take away something that you love. If you need to set it aside for a little while because it hurts, then do, and come back to it later.

I'm really sorry. I have no advice since I live in too small a town for there to be any groups (although I am working on changing that!) but I know how you feel. I am in the same situation with the only belly dance group around. It really stinks when people ruin something you enjoy and hold dear just because of their own personal issues.

Luckily, your clothes are portable. Wear them wherever you wish, and leave the drama behind.
