Great tutorial but all the ascots I've seen have pointed ends not square ones :S

Modern ascots do have pointed ends. It's difficult to find clear info on the exactly what the various Victorian styles looked like, but from my understanding, they did have square ends. At least some of them.

At any rate, it doesn't really matter, since the ends aren't seen.

There was much more variety in Victorian neckwear than we have in the modern day, so steampunk costumers may have square or pointed ends as they prefer. Or gear-shaped ends. :D

Most of the cravats I make are more like modern ascots (pointed ends, cut on the bias), but as mentioned, since you tuck the ends into your vest, it doesn't really matter.

Understandable ^_^ just thought it might be more efficient to make it pointed, or a more curved end would likely sit better if the ascot was left untucked. But to each their own :)
