Gear-shaped doilies

Such a challenge might well be a fait accompli for someone in this community, and photos would be all the better.

Now, I'm only a novice at Bobbin lace, and not able to draft a pattern with it yet. But I do not see why a lace gear doily wouldn't be possible.

I've definitely seen some, including a few basic gear doily patterns which people were putting together into scarves and shawls and things, plus one utterly amazing gear-shaped knitted shawl, and a pair of drapey gear-shaped lace wrist cuffs. Look on ravelry.com; using steampunk as a search term will turn up everything I've mentioned. There's at least one steampunk-inspired forum there, as well.

Ah. Here are the crocheted cogs, which are the most doily-like of what I've mentioned:

Those are beautiful (and the design looks as if it could also be readily adapted into a T'ai Chi or tomoe motif); thank you for the link.

There's also this but it's the size of a shawl, so not exactly a doily.

TotusMel on Etsy has some wonderfully steamy gear shaped pieces http://www.etsy.com/listing/69138771/asymmetric-sepia-tatted-one-of-a-kind

Crochet lends itself very well to gear shapes, too

I'm sure that you could come up with a good pattern just by doing some more image searches.

I thought of Totus Mel as well.

Thanks for steering me to the links (and the reference to tatting--admittedly with the word intended in its original context--evokes the practice of "tit-tatting", the newspaper blogging subculture of Salmagundi.)

Don't forget these:

Just need to either scale up a bit for a doily, or do a motif based pattern with multiple gears.
