Science! and textiles - the Creation movie

Just saw Creation, which was released in Australia last week. It's a fictionalised biography of Darwin as he was procrastinating about writing the On the Origin of Species, so set in the 1850s, and very nicely done though a bit emotionally harrowing.

Thoroughly recommended to anyone who likes to see Things In Jars, skeletonised pigeons, chaps in big ( Read more... )

That movie was not what I was expecting. I was kinda of D= throughout the entire thing. It was lovely; I suppose I just wasn't warned that it would be so damn sad.

I was lucky - I wanted to see it on Friday night but my husband vetoed it as not being something to see late in the evening (and he's usually all for tragedy!). There were hands dabbing at eyes all over the cinema.

The costumes look like fun. I want to see all the historical medical tech.

Hydrotherapy gets a lot of screen time. Apparently you can cure anything with scientifically applied cold showers and a stiff rubdown. :)

I also recently saw this and I thought it was a fabulous movie! Maybe I'm a bit more.... hardass, but I didn't think it was all THAT sad.... I actually thought the most sad part was the story of the orangutan.

It's a very good depiction of Victorian life, from the still-very-primitive medical practices, to the myopic views of life.

And it doesn't hurt that I love Paul Bettany! I think he is a marvelous actor.
