Make-up advice...?

Oct 22, 2008 08:45

Hello again.  Once more I need some assistance.  This time on make-up.  I have absolutely no idea if there are any tips or tricks or styles of makeup that would be more appropriate for the steampunk style so I'm asking the collective experts.  I'm going for an uppercrust feel with the outfit so any suggestions are greatly appreciated.  For an idea ( Read more... )

you need to set the wig further back on your head, it is eating your forehead. you need to see where the forehead starts to curve back! and consider highlighting your eyebrows w/ a ruddy brow pencil so they more match the wig. as for makeup, for uppercrust you want a refined natural look (victorians didn't wear much if any, but you will be taking pictures and walking around in a modern world); i would go for a powder foundation, rosey-tinted lip gloss/balm, a slight and smudged lid liner (go w/ a pencil, bottom go from outer corner to outer edge of iris looking forward, top outer corner to inner edge of iris looking forward, smudge w/ finger), and maybe a bit of lid powder, with a light grey on the lids and a white under the brow, blended together

Most time periods that inspire steam used very little makeup. At most a bit of tint on the lips. I would concentrate on having superb skin tone. Since you have freckles this is not going to be easy. I have had grand results with mineral based powder makeups for evening skin tone even over freckles. Otherwise you are going to need a full coverage creme base to try and fully cover your freckles and a good quality powder. Very simple eye makeup will help get a bare yet glamors look. Since you Have blue eyes see if you can find a orange based brown eyeshadow. MAC and Urban Decay have great colors. Find a video on youtube if you need help with the actual application of the shadow and such. Watch bunches of them and find one that makes scene to you. For an upper crust feel I would go a bit heavy on the eyes. If you go heavy on one aspect you should be more neutral with the other bits so that you don't look like a painted Jezebel. Post what you are able to do so that we can help you further.

I think that I might not have been very clear, when I said "I would concentrate on having superb skin tone. Since you have freckles this is not going to be easy." I didn't mean to sound like i was saying you should even out your freckles. Your freckles are awesome! I recommended the mineral based makeups for that reason, they are sheer enough that you can even without covering so that your freckles will still be visible.

For steampunk makeup i love evening out my complexion, a little base a little powder so you look creamy, and then a pink toned blush in the apple of the cheek, salmon toned eyeshadow in a soft wash across the lid, black mascara, or even individual false eyelashes to make the eyes very large, and a deep rose toned or mauve lip, something elegent and stained, also these colors would work with your complexion really well. another wig tip, pull it back and cover the front with a headband, scarf goggles, anything, it will make the wig look more real and not just thrown on. good luck and have fun!

do keep in mind if you go for the mineral powder foundation that it ends up quite shiny in flash photos, even using a diffuser.

that depends on the brand. BareMinerals has a setting powder that reduces the flash shine like nothing else I have found.

I'm allergic to BareMinerals. Would love to find something like it, though.

First of all, shape your eyebrows!!! IMO fuzzy eyebrows can easily ruin whole appearance of makeup. If you can't do it yourself, go to see a cosmetologist.

Second thing: don't hide your freckles. This is steampunk, not victorian re-enactment, so you can look personal. I would put on some eye makeup in brown shades, mascara (and eyelash curlers before that!) and rosy or mauve lipstick.

+1 to not hiding the freckles.

I suppose it's too late, but I think the wig is a bit dark.

Totally agree on the freckles. They are fantastic.
