The easiest would be a full-circle cape, which you can simply draw onto the backside of your fabric and then sew to a lining.

This website has a fairly easy to understand outline of how to do so.

his supervisors sent an email around the building telling everyone they 'just had to come and look at this'.... far as i know, nobody in the crowd thought to take a picture! i wouldn't be suprised, though, he's a bit of a poseur, as if you couldn't already tell- his more 'daily' wear is leopard print, strangely, but he is in a band..

The cape you are describing sounds a bit like the capes the three musketeers wore.
Most capes/cloaks are off the same pattern with just a slight alteration smile, at least that's the way I've done them.

There is also this...

The item that you're talking about in that first link is called a Pelisse, it's a particular type of Dolman favoured in military uniforms (especially cavalry) during the early 19th century. While very dashing (I adore the look myself,) it was rarely if ever seen on men when not part of a military uniform. Also, that's a lot of work for a first project (they were usually very intricately detailed and lined in fur.)

i KNEW i knew the name in the back of my head somewhere, thank you! i think it would be pushing it a bit to say that he looks disciplined enough to be in the 19th century cavalry, but he does carry a modern-ish ceremonial sword (by 'carry', i mean play-fights with it around the houss, he got from his father, who's a non-comissioned officer in the british army) i wouldn't line it in fur, fake or otherwise, but i can handle simpler detail, sewing on braid etc. thanks again!
