Connor knew he was a coward. Becker would never run away from harsh truths. Connor was always running. He desperately wanted to bolt now but this was something he needed to face. Whatever came next.

“I think I killed someone,” he said.

“Think?” prompted Becker.

“I’m not sure...I…,” faltered Connor. “There’s an inn…”

“Connor,” said Becker, drawing him into a loose embrace, “Is this about Leek?”

Encircling arms made escape impossible. Connor shut his eyes and nodded.

“Leek’s dead,” said Becker, “By his own hand.”

Connor sagged in mingled shame and relief.

Becker held him closer. “Start from the beginning.”
