Becker found Lester in the drawing room composing a letter.
“My ward?”
“Asleep,” replied Becker, not elaborating.
Lester put down his pen. “I am writing to Abby to inform her of our return to Manchester. She’ll need suitable chaperonage.”
“Connor stays with me.”
“Based on what?” countered Lester. “That’s not your decision to make. Remember, I asked you once if you loved Connor and you said you didn’t know. Will you answer now?”
“Not to you,” said Becker.
Lester gave him a searching look. He reached into his pocket and drew out a gold ring. “Connor will want this back.”
