The body lay crushed under the wheel of a farmer’s cart. Sir James stood to one side while Miss Maitland photographed the crime scene. Mr Temple was throwing up into the gutter.
Sir James thought aloud. “There’s no money. Who stands to benefit from Leek’s demise?”
“Mankind,” noted Miss Maitland.
“Literally, not figuratively.”
She tried again. “Christine Johnson, Caroline Steel, Helen Cutter.”
“He was a philanderer,” agreed Sir James. “But this is clearly opportunistic. Both Johnson and Cutter would premeditate a murder. Miss Maitland, Mr Temple, when you’re ready, I believe we need to pay a call on Miss Steel.”
