I dunno, I find the fact that it's almost April and there's not even a first draft when Simon Pegg is supposed to shoot in August and September worrying. Especially since TrekMovie pointed out that Pegg didn't spend as much time filming as, say, Chris and Zach did, so filming could start earlier than that. It makes me wonder when they are supposed to actually start shooting, and if they will have any time to look the script over again, or if they're going to turn in the equivalent of a first draft near the deadline and then fix it on the fly.
I'm not freaking out or anything yet, but I really hope they finish a first draft soon.
Remember at the end of the STXI promo tour, by the time we knew there would be a second movie, they were saying they wanted to script done by December 2009? WTF happened, guys?
SERIOUSLY. And why am I the only one freaking out about how they weren't even sure how much time had elapsed since xi/level of familiarity? Am I the only one who thinks this is some CRUCIAL SHIT for character development and that it's an awful sign they had no clear cut idea how they'd go about this? :(
Am I over-thinking this? :( DO I NEED SOME HALDOL?
No, I'm seriously side-eyeing the writing team right now.
I'm hoping the "how much time has elapsed" question was rhetorical/just for the fun of seeing people's opinion because really they should have the shit figured out by now.
I really think we're going to end up with either 1) a delay or 2) a half-assed script. (ETA: Or both.)
because really they should have the shit figured out by now.
By *now*, I'm sure they've figured it out (and I think they went with a very small time jump based on something Pegg said on Leno - *), but they HADN'T back in January when Orci first asked about it. "believe it or not, when i asked, we did not have a fixed answer. was genuinely curious about input."
I think them not having a fixed answer by January is damning. Actually, I think them not having a fixed answer at least a few months after they were aware there would be a sequel damning, tbqh.
The entire development of their protagonists and their protagonists' relationship hangs on the elapsed time decision. This isn't a side issue, wtf. If it is to them, I'm not sure I'm gonna like the story they're working on.

Seems most fans on that site want an entire 2 years between the first movie and this one. I definitely don't, because what I'm most interested in is seeing how everyone GETS to know each other. If we go into 2 years later, we miss out on a lot of bonding and a lot of Kirk's personal growth as a captain, imo. DNW.
Hmm, I kinda see where you're coming from. But I kind of...don't want like a reshash of old an old TOS episode made into a movie and stretched out, if that makes sense, and that's what I'm worried will happen if they jump ahead too far. I wouldn't mind that for a third movie, maybe, but I don't want them jumping IMMEDIATELY to that point.
Like I said above, I think they are working with a really small jump, if any. I just hope that between juggling an ensemble of 7 plus whatever expected additions (villains, side characters, etc) they have enough time to make Kirk and Spock really connect.

I fear they won't.
