I think you should totally make one of your own! It really helps you stay motivated, and also gives you that little extra to work towards, besides fitting in smaller jeans, of course ;)

As for the food thing, I know!!! I know the best way to ensure you're not overspending is to make sure you get fruits and veggies that are in season and on sale at the time, but even then... it's still a lot of money! Especially when I have so many bills and stuff to pay :(
