I also enjoyed the movie, but it was a bit in spite of myself. I am depressed because I keep seeing all the things that make no sense instead of simply enjoying the action.
The absolute impotence of the government. The fact that the only official reaction was a couple of cops on the streets with toy guns. Even in this very moment there are serious weapons that can be used in a serious fight. Thor's hammer is like what I use to beat up meat for schnitzels. It wasn't very impressive, aside from its boomerang quality. Oh, speaking of Thor, I've also seen the movie Thor - it was lovely to see the same people who designed ways to travel through various dimensions of the universe, harnessed amazing energies and created super robots - riding on horseback from one place to another, carrying useless capes and fighting with swords

I noticed the cops too... that always seems to be the case in these shows, where severely underequipped cops show up and then kind of stare at the insanity and get killed

No, I haven't seen any of the movies. Superheros movies aren't my thing usually. But everybody and their mothers loved this so I'm thinking I should give it a try.
Superhero movies aren't something I go out of my way for but I somehow end up watching many of them regardless... I really liked the Avengers, but I'd also seen the movies leading up to it. It might be something that you appreciate most if you've seen the other movies first and know the motivations for the characters because then you're more emotionally involved in their plights. It's probably a good movie on its own but without that background/connection to the characters you may also find yourself focusing on the things that are normal in superhero movies but require suspension of disbelief for someone used to regular movies
