Superhero movies aren't something I go out of my way for but I somehow end up watching many of them regardless... I really liked the Avengers, but I'd also seen the movies leading up to it. It might be something that you appreciate most if you've seen the other movies first and know the motivations for the characters because then you're more emotionally involved in their plights. It's probably a good movie on its own but without that background/connection to the characters you may also find yourself focusing on the things that are normal in superhero movies but require suspension of disbelief for someone used to regular movies.
[ETA] If you watch only one of the previous movies, I recommend Iron Man. I LOVED that movie too. And it's a superhero movie but I think it's less of a 'superhero movie' the way people generally think of it. Because the main character is just a really smart dude who figures out how to react to shit that happens to him and how to make a really advanced suit of armor. So it's not like someone who randomly has some crazy accident and now he has super powers. I also felt like that was a lot more like a 'normal' movie than most superhero movies are. I've rewatched it like 5 times XD
