Random Memory: When I was 9 years old and playing through StarTropics on NES, I got to this one level that I just could could NOT figure out how to get through. I don't remember the exact level (I remember it was like a maze, though), so here's a random screenshot:

I think it's good that gaming is not an exclusive guy-thing anymore -- if it ever was. We need more positive role-models for girls.

Also, why would you buy Valentine's bread if you have Roog's Super Dough at home? ;)

I really liked that story. I remember getting a subscription to a monthly gaming magazine and talking about games with the guys at school. Things are so different now.

Yeah, I had subscriptions to Nintendo Power, GamePro, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and later PSM (PlayStation Magazine). All of those magazines are now defunct.... sad. :C Things really have changed so much.

I subscribed to EGM too! I got some birthday money or something so I used it to give myself a gift 12 times a year. I remember giving my cousin the map to one of the Zelda games when he couldn't figure something out. If we still couldn't do it, we'd ask that one video game person at school -- you know, the person who knew all the cheat codes.

Now we just google it or ask forums.

Memories!

Those were the days! I'm like you in that I keep my iPhone handy and ready to google at a moment's notice now. How impatient we have become!

It's nice having the internet to solve our questions and get our news within minutes after it's announced, but I kind of miss the thrill of gaming mags. I had a subscription to Nintendo power for a few years in elementary school and EGM through most of junior high and high school and it was always so fun to sit down with the magazine for a few hours the day it arrived and see what new games had been announced, what had been just been released, all that. Internet gaming sites are a logical evolution, but it's still sad that gaming mags are mostly irrelevant now. :(
