Random Memory: When I was 9 years old and playing through StarTropics on NES, I got to this one level that I just could could NOT figure out how to get through. I don't remember the exact level (I remember it was like a maze, though), so here's a random screenshot:
So I did the only thing a lost gamer in 1991 could do-- I wrote a letter to the Nintendo Power Game Counselors asking for advice.
It took over a month, but finally a letter arrived!! Inside the envelope was a typed, full-page letter carefully explaining how to get through. Stapled to that page was a MAP that the counselor (a woman!!) had helpfully drawn. I immediately turned on my NES and, map in hand, managed to get through the level.
This was huge for me in a number of ways: Mostly because it was the first time I'd ever encountered another girl who really, really liked games. Sure, I had girl buddies that I could persuade to play Mario 3 with from time to time. Sometimes I'd manage to persuade my sister to play with me too. But I had never met a girl that really LOVED games, like I did.
Also, it's just funny to remember what life was like without internet. These days, I play games with my iPad right next to me, ready to look things up at a moment's notice if I ever got lost or stuck. (I have no shame.) My brother, who's 17 now, has had internet pretty much his entire life. And there I was, at age 9, waiting OVER A MONTH for a letter to come so I could finally advance in a game. The mind boggles.
Speaking of games, I'm at over 65% completion in Red Dead! Finished the Treasure Hunter and Survivalist challenges.
I was looking for plants in Tall Trees, and I came across this woman weeping over the body of this dead dude. I walked over but she just ignored me. Then she threw down the bottle of booze she'd been drinking, and just... died. Just laid down and died. Wow. D-:
Random picture time! Here's RooG doing TurboFire HIIT 20. He's lost some weight recently and is lookin pretty good, if I do say so myself.
Cute Valentine's Day breads at the bakery. Didn't buy any, though.
