Easter, Candy, and Ham

I sort of get why lamb is a popular Easter dish -- spring lambs, etc. But what's the deal with ham? I grew up in an Easter ham household, and I don't see the connection. Is this Christians' way of saying to the Jews, "Nyah nyah, Jesus saved us, so now we can eat all the pork we want ( Read more... )

Thanks! Happy April 12 to you, too. I'm sure being Jewish carries its own baggage, but I agree: it's fun to borrow.

It's a little cold to leave the door open. I've got an extra chair, though, if he wants to come down the chimney.

Happy April 12!

sylvia_101 pointed me in your direction, after I asked a similar question about ham yesterday. It's always surprised me that we don't eat chicken at Easter, what with the eggs and everything. And then some families I know eat lamb at Easter...which, given the religious symbolism has always struck me as a bit morbid. But at least there's a discernible connection with lamb. Ham, on the other hand, just seems random.

(Admittedly, I probably wouldn't care so much if I actually liked ham.)

Anyway, hi! Would you mind if I friended you? Feel free to do the same, if the mood strikes you.

Hi, and happy April 12 to you, too! I've been seeing your name show up sylvia_101's LJ for years now. Yes, friend away. :-)

I just Googled to see if anyone had other thoughts on the ham issue. Apparently it's a pretty popular question! Here's someone with a few ideas, though nothing definitive. Hmmm...

Nice Katchoo icon, btw.

I have the feeling the pagan ham answer is probably the best bet, though...

Yeah, I like the answer about how ham would be done with the curing process in spring, too. I think that answer appeals to my pioneer nature.

And re: Katchoo icon, thanks! That icon often sums up how I feel after a long day of silly reference questions.
