We've probably talked about this before, but a big part of my personal ambivalence toward UU is that it still seems "just like church but without the Jesus." And since so much of church is totally centered around Jesus, it has felt to me -- on the occasions I've gone to a UU service -- that there's a big Jesus-shaped hole in the proceedings that everyone's kind of tiptoeing around. Your thoughts on the "fish Fridays" thing amuses me. I'm not sure if you were kidding or not, but I'm pretty sure the Catholics are not taunting the Jews by fish-eating. I'm pretty sure it's because at some point Catholics ate no meat at all during the duration of Lent, representing the time when Jesus was in the "wilderness" fasting prior to Passover. But over the years apparently it was too much hassle not to eat meat for 40 days, so the Pope said, "Okay, you can eat meat during Lent... but not on Fridays!" So now they eat fish on Fridays because, apparently, fish is not meat.
I would say, "Does that make sense?" But I'm pretty sure it doesn't!
