When did you first notice Battlestar Galactica? Were you a fan of the original and decided to give the new one a try out of curiosity? Did you take the persistent pestering recommendation of a friend? Or did you find it by complete accident while you were channel surfing? Whatever the case may be, share your story.I'm pretty sure I've told my story ( Read more... )

Well I enjoyed the first series in that cheesetastic way I love Star Trek TOS, but I was vehimently against the new series. I remember I recorded the mini-series when it first aired and after hearing about what was in it and watching the first few minutes I stopped watching it and ignored it. I was bothered by all the changes from the original: Starbuck being a girl, Boomer a girl and a cylon, etc. I didn't watch the first series when it aired. After Atlantis the telly would still be on and my friend and I would wish we watched the show because the score was freaking awesome but it looked stupid to us. Well, then SGA and SG-1 ended their seasons a week before BSG did, so there was nothing to watch that Friday night. I sat there and watched the final 3 episodes of season 1 not knowing a damn thing about the show and being confused as all get out. The final moments of KLG p2 left me in shambles. I still didn't know what was going on but I was hooked. I got a few friends hooked and now I'm all fangirly about the show, even though I don't ( ... )

hehe! Wow, you came in at the perfect time - just before KLG2 shocked the hell out of everyone.

...best SGA fic ever?

So I'm going to start this comment with a hatred of IE because the computer I'm on has IE only and it just ate my comment.

Now let's see how much of my comment I remember.

Yeah, KLG2 had me yelling at the telly and I didn't know who was who and what was what. I only knew that Apollo was hot the story was good despite me not understanding anything and I was hooked.

Currently the best SGA fic ever is cesperanza's Written by the Victors. It's fantastic. It's written sort of like a history book and it has excerpts from them and quotes from the people involved and all that jazz. Basically the IOA wants to recall the city back to Earth to protect it and John's like screw that we belong in Pegasus so he and Elizabeth have a showdown. Really good, phenomenally good! It's McShep and sort of graphic in places but it'd be easy enough to skip over those parts because the meat of the story is so fantastic. I was thinking about selectively editing the fic and letting my Mom read it. But yeah, really good.

*bops IE*

Hmm, I haven't really read any fic in AGES. I may bookmark this one. Won't get around to reading it for a while, but at least I'll have a copy of the link. Thanks!

i dunno why i'm answering this, you've already heard this story a bazillion times, but here it goes again. :)

i was in dallas, bored to death, and happened to pick up donnie darko from a friend. the movie literally changed my life, but that's another story, for another time. anyways, mary mcdonnell was in it, whom i loved as a child in dances with wolves and later in id4, but haven't heard of in ages, so i decided to imdb her and see what she's been up to. that's when i noticed bsgnow i had heard of the show before, but frankly i wasn't interested, considering i had watched the original series as a child and found it (now, at any rate) silly. plus, the fact that tricia helfer's boobs and bottom were at the time used in pretty much all the ads was also a minus: i resent advertising that uses women to sell products. the thought that mary mcdonnell had agreed to be in it kind of changed my mind though: she wouldn't be in a show that's THAT cheesy, or horrible, right? RIGHT ( ... )

Yeah, it takes a lot of effort for me to sit down and watch the mini. I can watch bits and pieces... like Laura being sworn in Roosevelt-style or Boomer being forced to leave Helo behind on Caprica (surprisingly, one of my favorite moments ever because it's so heartbreaking, LOL). But the whole thing? Uh uh.

33... 33 just PWNS.

I'm a long time fan of both Mary and Eddie. I was not looking to get into a new series, much less one that looked so damn depressing. Daughter, however, kept nipping at my heels.

Then came the "airlock" ep. Daughter, rotten thing that she is, knew she had me. Yup, she knew she had her warm fuzzy mother right where she wanted her when she called to tell me about Mary And The Airlock (not to be confused with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).

I tried to keep out while she kept pulling me in. The Pegasus trilogy sealed the deal. Love Michelle Forbes too :)

Then I saw Starbuck in action and I was in for a penny, in for a pound.

And I watched all of the original series when it aired. I'm still waiting for the tinsel capes to show up at some point even in the background.

Did you watch both of the original series or just the first one that premiered just after Star Wars was released?

The airlock ep used to creep me out. I could NOT watch it. ...now it is one of my favorite top five episodes ever because of the Laura and Kara love! I gotta love on my girls.

I watched them both. I knew they were cheesy but at that time, sci-fi on tv was extremely limited. Those of us who love sci-fi took what we could get.

It is a creepy episode! However the airlocking is exactly what I would have done and exactly the way I would have done it. What that says about me is well . . . up for interpretation.

Then there is Kara. I have yearned for strong women on tv for years. Not necessarily Amazons, just women who don't run from the monster, trip, and lay on the ground and shriek helplessly :)

*giggle* On one hand, I want very much to be like Kara, the pilot - daredevil in the sky, no fear, confident... but the rest of her baggage, I'd rather leave behind. :)

I always remembered the original BSG as being a cheesy rip-off of Star Wars, despite the fact that I had the large hardcover picture book of the series when I was a kid. I didn't think much of it...

Then I saw ads for a miniseries. That was cool. The effects looked really nice, and there were some big names starring in it. They modernized it, made it cool, and I watched it. I loved the miniseries. I was a little hesitant about all the sexual innuendos and liberties, but I realized that it added to the overall mood and theme of it. Sweet. Great acting, great effects, and great story. What a wonderful miniseries.

I went to the Trek Expo in Tulsa the following June with stargater, and while we were there to see MICHAEL SHANKS, I remembered that Starbuck from the new BSG miniseries, Katee Sackhoff, was there also and was doing her panel as we were shopping for cool scifi things ( ... )

Wow, Katee did the Trek Expo?? Wonder if they'll ever be able to reel her back. :)
