WANTED: suggestions for an adrenaline junkie

Nov 21, 2008 11:20

A character in a story of mine is quite the adrenaline junkie. I am not. Hence my plea for help for ways to show that the character does things for the thrill of it. He's a working class white American, athletic, mechanically adept, in his late 30s, and lives in a West Coast city ( Read more... )

I knew a guy who liked to dress & act inappropriately in dangerous places. I don't mean overly sexy or anything like that. More like going cowboy in a hip-hop place, or hip-hop in a country bar. The equivalent of walking into a biker bar and ordering milk.

This resulted in physical violence about one in three times, which led to a fairly consistent level of adrenalin during such evenings.

ER (I think it was ER) had a funny episode with a psychologist who was studying anger. He would say things that were deliberately provocative to people to see how much it took to elicit an angry response.

Sounds like a fun character!

Depends where on the west coast. If he lived in Hollywood/L.A. it'd be feasible for him to moonlight as a stunt-car driver while having a "normal" regular job, no?

The setting will likely be San Francisco. There's quite a bit of film/TV production there, so occasional stunt car gigs are possible. Thanks muchly!

If it's set in SF, I like the idea of buildering a lot.

I think it really depends on the character. If you want people to think he's got mental problems or is a jerk, then more options become available.

Duly noted about buildering. Thanks!

The character is mentally stable and not a jerk. He's a bit selfish and immature and has little respect for authority, though.

Oh oh! Almost forgot about storm/tornado chasing. This is one of my personal faves :-)

Ooh, good one! I can't imagine this character chasing storms, but I'm filing that away for future story fodder. Thanks!
