After several failed and sometimes quite amusing attempts at unaided communication, Ifix decided to return to her own quarters.

She was tired and more than a little distracted. Ever since the sex change, something hadn’t felt quite right, and now she was feeling a bit cold. She caught her reflection in one of the wall panels when she stopped to ask the station for directions. Her fur seemed thin.

Too thin. Way too thin. Almost like she was quickly balding. Without any more notice than noticing, most of her remaining fur dropped away in one grand rush!

In a normal environment this would have induced sheer panic. But recently, this environment wasn’t normal. In fact, it lacked many of the indicators that would point towards anything even remotely resembling normal. Forearmed with this knowledge, Ifix was able to bypass sheer panic and settled instead for concerned alarm. Knowing that the doctor had messed with her fur once before, she immediately suspected him. Whether this was deliberate, or some strange side effect of the virus, she would need to discover.

Since her coverall was more for utility than comfort, she decided to change her outfit. Once in her quarters she replicated warmer clothing. Just as she was about to put them on, she noticed her fur was starting to return. In yellow.

Bright canary metallic yellow.

She looked like Big Bird on acid. Except for the height. And the beak. And perhaps the wings. Those old human cultural videos never really resolved that fact. If he’s a bird, why does he have hands?

Ifix refocused. The doctor would pay. Maybe she could learn how to sing like Lothar. That could be fun.
